The gratification of the impulse is teequently found ar-ociated with physical changes and conditions which may ba regarded as incompatible with the healthy dis- charge of the functions of the nervous system; but the connection fs by no means invariable, and the best mode of establishing the real'ty of such @ disease is to consider marked c1s2s 1n re. lation to the character, interests and previoas deportment of the individus!; to the nature of the aiiicles taken, and t> the motives which stemt> have detsrmined the action. She was in the custom of vi-iting the tore ft price the ge: and it was noticed that she usually brought in her hands a parcel, which ebe was in the habit of placing upon the counter while she Icoked about the placa. Yet it could not be seen that she ever co: ed. anything about her, or took away auy.hing more than the bundle she brought. But one | day it was found that an article under the bundle where ehe lett the latcer on the counter ‘was missing when she lefi. She way followed, and it wes ascertained that the package she carried so constantly was in reality nothing bat @ hat (or bonnet) body so wrapped up, that, while appearing to be @ compact package as she held it, it was really an empty shell, and by placing it over the aritcle sought to be taken, she was able to pick it up inside the hat-body and carry it away without attracting any atten- tion. The clerk who followed her to her resi- dence foond on the mantels and what-nots in ber parlors a large number of articles purloined im thia way; but it was £o evidently a case of mental d'sea-e that no exposure was made. Although each case must be tested on its own merits, there are va- rious features, common to a number of even Goubtiul cases, which should be embraced wherever s judgement is formed.
