Mrs. Coombs | some years ago had a eevere attack of disease of the biain, from which she never entirely recoy- ered, and finally insanity ensued. It waa thought best that she should return to her friends, and | as been with them some months. ‘This ja preyed greatly upon her husband's mind, and so impaired his health that of late he had been subject to attacks of nervous prostra- | tion and peainachely. Last spring he mads a | visit to Europe for his health, but received but | | Hittle benefit from the trip. On the table in hia room, after his death, was found a copy of the Sunday Herald of ——s which contalned the following article: “‘& CLERICAL KLEPTOMANIAG. “For many months past the store of one of our prominent booksellers and stationers on Pennsylvania avenue has been visited by a man well on in years and neatly dressed, after the fashion of @ minister of the Gospel. He would, on all his visits, walk around the store examining books, sometimes lingering for half an hour or so, readin, es of this or that book, but never making @ purchase. Lately our stationer friend has been missin; —< his books, and all attempts to find how they were taken failed until yesterday, when the clerical-looking gentleman was discovered to be the kleptomamac. He was standing in the store, as was his wont, quietly reading a book he had taken from the shelves, when a custo- mer entered upon whom the proprietor turned to wait. The instant his back was turned the Gospel gentleman left the store. it suddeniy Occurred to the proprietor that this man invani- ably did the same thing on all of his visits, and he might be the person who was robbing him of bis property, 80 he went to the book shelf and to nis surprise he found the book the rey- e | bad been reading was gone. He imme- dia nf tellowed him up the street, and coming up to him asked him what he did with that book he Lad been reading in the atore. The rever- end gentleman’s face turned pale, and with the exclamation ‘For God's sake don’t expose me publicly,’ brought forth the stolen book from under his coat. The book merchant asked him Lis name, and he gave it as the Rev. —— , pas- tor of church in this city. Thinking prob- ably this was a thief’s blind, he insiated on bim having himself identified, which he did through a mere: t from the ne.ghborhood., merchant éaid it was 4 thing most painful for im to find a man who is a minister of the Gos pel committing a theft, and he would neither presecute him nor give his name to the newspa- pers, but he hoped it would be a lesson to him toreform atonce. This indeed waa a most gra- cious act, and a Herald reporter, in an inter- view with the book merchant, asked him how he came to beso lenient. He replied that although not a church member himself nothing made him so sick at heart as these church scandals, and he thought in the present case the culprit coald be punished as he ought to without injaring his poor family and the church with wiich he is connected by exposure in the newspapers or the Police Court. ‘Then, too,’ said the book mer- chant, ‘he was such a fine looking man, and he begged so piteously that I couldn't in my heart expose him.’ The circumstance thus referred to occurred at a bookstore on Pennsylvania avenas, about 2 o'clock on Saturday, and created some excitement, and a number of Mr. Coombs’ per- sonal friends and acquaintances were made cog- nizant of the chargeof theft. Thisand the pab- ication rexerted to, it is thought, threw him into a temporary At of insanity, in which he euded bis life. _ it seems that the book-marchau, had noticed Mr. Coombs handling the book taken ,“‘Nie- r’s Lectures on the History of Kome,”) in a Way that caused suspicion, and on bis leaving the store the dealer found that the volume was missing, and tollowing Mr. Coombs, he tapped him on the shoulder and asked him to retarn the volume in question, naming it by the title. Mr. Coombe seemed unable to make any ex- planation, and exclaimed, “For God’s sake, don’t expose me!” On being asked hls name, he at first gave it as the “‘Kev. Mr. Healy,” but afterwards gave his real name. Distreseing as the result has been, no blame can be attached to the book-dealer in question, who, though naturally feeling somewhat excited the loss of his goods, seems to bave acted ; With no little forbearance under the circam- stances, as, on ascertaining the name of Mr. Coombe, he assured him that he should be “pared any further exposure or distress in the matter, and the same evening he sent a further assurance to the same effect by a friend of the deceased. On Saturday evening some gentlemen who had ecen or heard of the oecurrence suggested thst some of Mr. Coomb’s brother ministers should call on bim, and Dr. Sunderland weut up tosee him. Mr. Coomb’s, on being asked as to the truthfulness of the reports, said appar- entiy in a broken spirit: “It is too trae, I have - She; year of Ler age, | been caught taking a book froma bookeeller’s. | Idon’t know why I did it, for Lhad money to | pay for it’ (at the same time showing that he | bad upwards of @30 in ble pocket). Ho further | caid to Dr. S. that it was too bad, and he could | not meet bis congregation on Sunday. | On Saturday atter the occurrence, and on his return to Mrs. Catheart’s, he appeared to be very much depressed, and in conversation with | hereaid: «This is a very short and brief life, | and so unsatisfactory.” Mra. C. attempted to | cheer bim, and inquired why life was unsatis- | factory, and he replied: “ It is so full of sor- rows.” Ho did not, however, say anything to Mrs. C, about the occurrence. It is apparent that the deceased had been la- boring for many years under this kleptomanic infirmity. We are inrormed by a leading city bookseller that some six years ago Mr. Coombs was detected taking books from his store. He was followed to his house and charged with the Geed, whereupon he fell upon his knees and begged for mercy, asking God to forgive him, alse. in the most excited manner.
