Irwin with reference to the use of money expended in securing for the Pacific mail steamship company the subsidy of five million dollars trom the 42d Congress, taken by Meters. Dawes, Beck and Kasson, asub-com- mittee of the Committee of Ways and Means: AT BIS FIRST EXAMINATION, after some diseursion, Irwin said that he was an sesistant accountant for the company and general agent, and that in 1s72 he was engaged by special contract to come to Washington a grt the subsidy through.
