Business of «rest im- poriasee decla-3t Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY: SUESPAY December 15, 1874. Sbdeut King Lalnkaua and His Do- mintons. The nowspapers quite generally make the mistake of King Kalakaua the “Kiag Of the Sandwich Island.” His title Is King of , bot asthe Sandwich Isiands form the f Hawall the mistake ts nataral. His Cominions consist of twelve sma‘ and+, sita. ated near the middie of the P c ocean, two thousand miles sonthwest of San Francisco, and | about equi-distant from San Francisco, Mel- bourne and Canton. They thas form an oasis in the middle of a wide ocean route, and offer | convenient stations for the refresh mont and re. Pair of the merchantmen and whalers that traverse the Pacific. The names and areas of the eight principal islands of the group are: Hawaii, (formeriy Owbyhee,) 4,00 square miles; Maui, ¢2); Oaba, 520; Kaui, 509; Molokai, 167; Lanai, 1); Niibau, about 70; and Kahoolant, about 60 square miles. The islands are of wol- canic origin, and contain the largest volcanoes, both activeand quiescent, in the workl. The most prominent phyrical features of the group are the two lofty mountain peaks of Hawaii, Mauna Kea aud Mauna Loa, each of which 14,000 feet in height, or within 1,9) feet of the loftiest of the Alps pm Though situated within the tropics, Wich Islands boast a climate that is tem; | rather than tropical. At Honolulu, the ex- | tremes of temperature in the shale 4: twelve years were 90° and 73°, and the Kenge is 12. The ceil, the tuent ¢ | which ar —de ed lava aad | fand—'s and p but st the bases of the tains and in the valleys where | abrasion tion, and the accamalation | Of vegets 3 gone va for ages, there are ex ts as fercile ast hey are Deaatiful. The uptand slopes of the mountains are covered with dense forests; and lower down, are grassy plains, and sugar and cottee planta. I ava’s subjects number 59,000 na- and five or six thousand fore giteh, German and Caines r capital ts lulu, @ beautiful city of aboat fifteen thousend inhabitants, sitaatet on the feacoast, emtowered in palm, tamaarin!, and all the luxuriant foliege of the tropics. Though it + is @email pation the machinery of th: gorern- Ment is the same as that of a large na‘ion. Tas King has bis Cabinet, Ministers of Finance, of Foreign A fairs, of the Interior, Attornsy Gane- | ral, Xe. Each inhabited island bas a governor. | ‘The Parliament consists of two bodies—House | ©f Commons or Kepresentative, electad by tha People, and House of Nobies—members of the | Foyal family, und others who have recsived patents of nubility from the King. The roys! line of Kamehamelias ended with the fifth of that name, then William Lanalilo reigned a year. He died last Febrasry witboat Raming a successor, preferring that the people should choose their monarch by ballot from the eligible members of the royal famiiy. Thera were two candidates for the crown, or—ona | should say—for the yeliow teather cloak of Kam- | ebameha, since that is the iusignia of royaity— Prince David Kalakaua and Qacen Emma, Widow of Kamehameha IV. ‘The merits and | Claims of the opposing candidates were zealously | discussed by their aduerents. Party spirit raa igh, and tough Princes David was electad kipg on the 12th of February, 1:74, by the natiena} legislature, by a large majority, receiv- ing. in fact, ail but six votes, the aduerents of ta Dowager Queen attempted to resist the election, and mace a mob assault upon the legislators. ‘These retreated to the upper story and barred the doors. The mob obtained accees to all ths lower rooms, broke up the furniture, destroyed the beoks and commenced beating in the doors. Meseergers were sent at full epeed by the King tothe men-of-war in the harbor, the English ship Tenedos, nd the two United States ves- fels, Portsmouth and Tuscarora, requesting immediate sid toward quelling the riot. Mean. while those inside the building reached the up- per story, and expressed their opinion of the members by beating them, throwing them oat the windows, &c. In a few minutes a file of armed marines appeared in sight, and the crowd around the building dispersed. The rioters inside were captured and quiet restored. After matters in the capital became serene, the King, accompanied bya Jarge suite, made the tour of the ditferent islands, and with a few exceptions, was en- thutiasticaliy welcomed wherever he stopped. Since then King Kalakaua’s authority has been fully establi*bed. As he has no children, Prince William Pitt Leleioboku has been pro- claimed successor to the throne of Hawaii, and bas been declared regent during the absence of the King on bis foreign tour; which, it is intl mated, may be extended to Europe. The quit- muncs have already rushed to the conclusion that a mission to which so mach importance eeemsto be attached by our government, as. well 2s bythe Hawaiian government, must have some deeper import than merely the ne- gotiation ef = reciprocity treaty; and their guess is that the cat under the mea! 1s a pro- Ject for the annexation of theSandqich isiands to the United States. It is pretty certain, how- ever, that the Hawaiians ha really the reciprocity treaty very much at heart; and, farther, it is hardly probable that King Kalakaus would willingly give up his distinguished ttular and other honors. To bs Sure, if bis kirgiom was annexed, he might come tothe United States Senate. ‘Senator Kalakaua” wourdn’t sound badly; and thoagh bis advent in Washington under that title wouldn't be apt to bring out Secretaries Fish, Roberon an‘ Belknap with the marines and the marine band to meet him, or supp!y him with asuite of twenty rooms at the Arlington, he Would stili ind some compensation in the long run. In view of contingencies. and as thera seemed to be considerable ¢lversity of pronunci- ationof the King’s name in the Congressional Cebates yesterday, it may be proper to add that the correct pronunciation is Kel-ah-kovw-ah, with the accent on the third syllable. King Kalekava’s capital cityof Honolala, we sbould mention, has two very good weekly Pspers—the Commercial Advertiser and the Ha- weiian Gazette. Scanning these we see that the kingdom has base-ball matches, kerosene accl- Gents, gift concerts, church fairs, national thanksgiving days, full details of the Beecher scandal, and other signs of civilization and ‘progress. a It will bea matter of satisfaction to every i parent in the land to know that retributive jas- tice bas reached the abductors of Charley Kosa, though that gratication would have been con- Sidetadly increased had the villains survived long enough to give information of the where- abouts of the stolen child. The business of child stealing will not present a particularly hopeful appearance te criminals of this class, in yiew of the result of the experiment in this case. The abductors not only failed to get a Penny of reward for their villainous work, but ‘Were doubtless put to comsiderab!e expenss in carrying out their echeme, and they have now met @ violent death with the fuli barden of their guilt upon them. —_——_-~-.. tives, American votes In Louisiana Itiz to be hoped they will be able to announce the result of the last election before (3e nex: one comes.
