SENNA OTT DS Oe ener VEN G STAR. ten y BoLyiRe BG SERGOTA TION cuttin tobe E CROSBY 8. NOYES.......Editor. Largest Circulation in the Distriet Reading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY..November 11, 1874. a About School Boards, The Boston press ate sgitating for School Board reform. It is alleged that ‘the number and inituence of good men in the committee is growing year'y smaller in consequenc: of the intrusion into the Boar. of self-secking, and in some cases, groesly ignorant politicians,” men «who know less of everything but trickery than many of the pupils whose interests are en- trusted to the'r charge.” It might be thought strange that the school committee (of Boston) should become the field for corrapt influences, as the members receive no pay; yet thst there weighty temptations to unscrupulous and incompetent men to secure seats in the Board is beyond question.” “There are rewards of jous Kinds,” it is stated, ‘‘which coms in to whet the appetite of the unscrupulous. Jobbery school books !s one of them, and appointment of friends of the committeeman as teachers is suother. Nepotism is not unknown in this busi- nets. If s member ‘bears like the Turk, no brother near the throne,’ it may be because he wants a place for some other relative. Tnere are cases where a manon the committec has secured @ teacher's place for his sister, whose enly qualificstion for the position was inability to properly perform its duties, and in another ease we are told the office has been usedin a still more scandalous way. The consequence ot all this is the wretched spelogy for instruc- tion which is received by pupils ia districts where these influences are most conspicuous, im the very small percentage of scholars able to paes an examination for adniission to higher aebools, althongh their preparatory training tis much to be hoped tute of things is eptional, and taat in no other American cities do seif-seeking, in- competent ard improper men get a place on school boards for purposes of books, or to procure the employment of reis- tives as schoo! teachers. Surprive is occasioned by the statemant of Assistant Postmaster General Barber that the country is Cefranded by the meansof “washed” and re-used postage stamps to the amount of a willion of dolisrs per annum. What may be a very good quality in calico is a very bad one in stamps. The dcsideratum is to invent some that won't wash. Parape.raia’s New dozen educated, wealthy, snd liberal young men are doing s gracious and proper thing for Philadelphia. They will build and open s saperior theater, to be called the Center Square Theater on Froad street, near the public buildings. The establishment is to be as nearly perfect as may be. A good stock company will be engaged, and unexceptional plays presented. Russell Smith ts to paint the ecenery—a guarantee for excellence,as he has no equal in the country. Now, we take the liberty to make a suggestion to these public spirited and tasteful young gentlemen. Let them offer three prizes for the best plays by American authors—say $2,()), 21,000, and $500, and say $20 night during the run of the play in Philadelphia. A proper committee to sit in judgment would be Col. Forney, Morton McMichael, William B. Mann, Louis A. Godey, Joseph Sailer, C. J. Peterson and Gen. Bing- ham. These are gentlemen of culture—all Sbaksperean—and they sre thoroughly up in all that relates to the drama. The Center Square Theater is to be opened on the first of October, 1 The uew theater ought to start with @ new and good American play. What say gentlemen of the press in Philadelphia? Taeat ‘The New York Tridunc declares that of most of the new members of the Honse there is not much to be eaid. The great majority are entire- ly unknown, and when we have recorded the fact that eo many are labeled “deraocrat,’ and eo many “republican,” we have told the whole story. That is tosay: the new members are 179 noborties. A Leausp PRorsssion.— Have news- paper men duly considered the decision recently made by the Secretary of the ‘Trearury, that the newspaper profession isone | of the learned professions? It is curious that the government has been so long in arriving at this just estimateof a laborious, an exacting, and most honorable profession. The editor is expected to discuss, ably and instantly. every question that may arise, and yet it has only jus; transpired offcially, that the profession is a learned one. The decision is timely and most creditable to the sagacity and independence of Secretary ! Bristow. “A very fine specimen of the trilobite was found a tew days ago, imbedded in a limestone rock, in Jackson's Grove, near Ellwood, in Will County, in thisstate, and is now in the poe session of Jobn Forsyth, Ex, of this city.” Chicago Tribune. A very fine fosei!, no doubt, but nothing to the recent discovery of a whole political party after being immured so many, many years. — It seems that the whole democratic state ticket in Pennsylvania is elected by an average majority of nearly six thousand, and that party will have at least twenty-three majority in the legislature on joint ballot. Judged from a repub- lican standpoint, Alleghany county bas done worse and worse. Latta carries the county by 2,615 majority; the two Congressmen are demo- crate, as are also eleven of the fourteen legisia- tors. The republicans of Philadeiphia city and county did mach better than those of Alleghany county, and the former county will now take the title of the banner republican county of the state. ‘The Italian elections bave, so far, resulted in popular indorsement of the policy of Victor Emmanuel. who have presented themselves to the people as candidates for Parliamentary honors have been Teturned. oe ‘The pneumonia or intlammation of the lungs ie prevailing to a considerable extent in Balti- more, fourteen deaths having occurred there ro that serious disease last week.
