About six months since a party brought one of these machines to this city from Trenton, New Jersey, and it was set up at the new machine shop of Mesers. Petit & Dripps, corner of 1th and B streets, the motive power being supplied from the botler andengine of the establishment. After exhibiting it toa pumber of leading clvizens company was formed and the mght of the states named par- chased, the sum paid being €1¢4 (0), Its capacity was fully tested at the establishment named, and proving satisfactory, the company set about putting it into practical operation. Mr. Himber moved that the consideration of the subject be postponed for the present. He thongbt they sbonld get at least $0, and should not accept the Offer too hastily. Mr. Finley sisted that an effort had been made yesterday by two of our Washington bro. kers fo depreciate the value of the District bonds. A sale had been reported to have been made between a stock jobber (Peter Oampbell) | and Nourse & Middleton at 69 cents. He did not besitate to say that in his opinion it was a bogus sale. AN CNCOMPLEMENTARY ALLUSION. The chair remarked that there was not brains enough aniong the brokers of this city, #0 -called to depreciate the value of District certificates and bonds. These brokers, for the most part, had gained their standing, such as it was, through the necessities of contractors, and they now seek to injure them by this weak subter- fnge. They should be totally ignored by the Contractors’ Association and regarded with contempt by the public. Had tt nat be the Blumenberg’s, Morse’s and Middlet> contractors would be much better off t thar they are. During the year the coastwise freight: have been comparatively low, owing to the building of steam colliers and large schooners, carrying about an average of between 50) and 70) tons. rh able, therefore, to take coal at tess rates than old coasters with only halt the cspaci- ty; and yet we find almost three times as mach tonnage in the coal trade as furmerly. The | price of Cumberland coal at Georgetown dur- ing the season has been about #450, and the average freight to Boston about $150. This would make the cost of coal delivered there | about $6 per ton. The result of this is that Cumberland coal! has been abie to hold tts own in the eastern markets, and the prospect for fa- ture trade in that direction is toward a coasid- erably increased consumption next year, par- ticularly if we compare the price and steam qualities with anthracite.
