In the case of the dise covery of geod grape land slong the western banks of the “Crooked Lake,” in New York, some twenty-five years ago, the land wes then felling at from S50 to $50 per acre. Now, in conse jnence of its superior grape beating quali- ties, it has advanced to frum $250 to £1400 per acre; and from the little vineyard that was pianted peat Hammondspert, at the head of that lake, some twenty-fire years since, there is now aimost & continuous vineyard extending from there to Penn Yan, the whole length of the lake, over twenty miles in length, and several millions of dollars capital has been thus invested im these vineyards and wine msnufactories. There grape planting is confined to within one and one-quarter miles of the lake, beyond that do not thrive, and it is presumed that the same will be the case here the Potomac. Soon after his arrest Grason was tried, and senteuced to a term of twelve years’ imprisonment in the District of Columbia peni- tentiary. Ke- cently Grason caused the srrest of the woman On some trivial charge, and yesterday, she, in a spirit of retaliation, appeared at the office of Justice Briscoe, and swore out @ warrant charging Grason with having escaped from the Histrict of Columbia penitentiary on or about the year 1562, just twelve years ago.
