In that little white cottage, almost hi¢den by the surrounding grove, none bat the ‘Tairest of faro was dealt, none but the jaarest of poker was bet on. ‘When the chips wers bought and the cards cut, each one felt that what fortune meant the pack to bring him would not be interfered with by any manipula- ton of the cards. But, alas! when was humanity beyond tempta- Hon? Adam fell, Coser fell, Waren fell, (at Hill,) and even Beecher ts suspected. am was tempted and he,—. Bat let me give the details, Judge Humpt: Colonel Swain, old An- drews (whose plat om Was measured by the thousand acres.) and Sol. Lovett, from St. Louis, were sitting in Oglivie’s front parlor playing a snug little game of draw. All were eavy betters when they held the cards, but just then the cards were ronning light, aud so + ere the bets. Sam, who cared verg little for poker, had eat a watching the game rather than going init. He held a Land, of course; but his thongbts were rather on the lay-out in’ the next room than on the cards in his hands. Sev. eral times he had hinted at abandoning the game, but each time the others had insisted on going On, 80 Sam had politely stitled his imp tience and bad kept his seat at the table. As the clock was telling ten, Sam was calied from the table, and excnsing himself for the moment, left the roam. His way was throngh the back parlor where lay the sleeping tiger. The table, with its layout, the case, piles of checks, decks of cards, all were re for the layers. As be glanced carelessly over them, & adden thought seemed to flash through Sam's rain. A sardonic smile crept over his thin cut Lips, and his long fingers played with his mas- tache, as if to hiae the twitching lips from some unseen observer. Advancing to the card-box, where cards by the dozen packs, in unbroken packages, lay piled up, he busied himseit for a moment in opening packs, breaking wrappers, and assorting cards, then, with an expression of guileless innocence upon nis face, but with a “cold deck” up hissleeve, he returned to the poker-table. Iv a few minutes it was Sam’s tarn to deal. His band faltered as he lifted the cards, a deuce spot Hnttered into his lap, and, in picking it up, @ rapid movement of tie long, lithe fingers, bad exchanged the table pack tor the “cold deck.” A erain of remorse seemed to touch bis heart when he came to serve the cards. «I can’t take @ band this deal, gentlem 1 have got to step around to the hotel for a mo ment.” The others acquiesced, and the cards were dealt. A good band, one would say, by the ac- tions of the players. There was a thousand in the pot and a very obstinate expression on the faces of the players betore the drawing began. Then a singular circumstauce was noticed. The sate only wanted one card; one card satisfied the Colonel, and one card esch took Lovett and Anderson. Odd, thought each one, and wondered whether they were trying to bite a tall ora flesh, or were biding fours. But each glanced at’ his own band, and calmly waited the issue, contident of his own and pity- ing the other’s hand. ‘The cards served, Sam lit bis cigar and started for the hotel. If he had waited he would have seen the tallest betting that was ever done iuside of that cottage. A thousand dollars the first bet, fifteen hundred the second, two thou- sand the third, and twenty-five hundred from the age” on the first round. Everybody in and willing to lap Kis pile. Out came check-books and pencils, and each one rapidly cast uo in his own mind how much his credit was good for among the commission merchants of New Orleans. Check atter check was written, torn cut and pisced om the table, until there was enough staked to crippie the richest mau there, af he lest. The judge stopped it. Why, I don't know unless it was that be had reached the last check in bis book. Ax be filled that out be remarked, with judicial gravity: 5 is but one band at the tal win that pot. gentlemen; ain’t it enough? If will see you, Colonel.” This checked the game. The pot was big enough in all conscience, and some of them trembled a little as they thought of the thou- eends piled there and how poor the call was to mxke three ot their comrades. Two mre sights and a call brought the game to afocus. Perspiration stood out upon more than one forebead, and the fingers that griped the cards tightened perceptibly as the crucial moment approached. And heads bad to be turned to prevent the hungry eyes from feasting too intensely upon the pile on the table. The venerable colonel hardiy looked up as he gently Isid down his hand: “Fours. Aces, gen- Uemen!” Then Andrews. with distended eyes and pursed-vp lips: “Four aces for me!” and the cards were laid upon the table to verify the claim. Reproachfully Lovett gianced at his ecom- rades as at inbospitabie barbarians from whora the ‘itle of stranger was no protection, and blandly remarked : “Excuse me, bat mine are — ours!” and again the cards proved the claim, Dashing bis spectacles from his Koman nose to his perspiring forehead, the judge sank back in his seat and gazed despairingly from tace to face around the board. As his eve met Lov. ett’s he partially straightened himself and said. “Sixteen aces,as Tam a sinner,” and again four aces Jay upon the table. They waited for Sam that night, bat be did not return to the cottage. A Hor Baick.—Mre.
