[Correspondence of The Evening Star.] RockviLxg, Mp., Sept. 12th, 1874. The county fair at this place closed yesterday and terminated a series of three successfal days, although there was complaint against the management for allowing all the stock and articles on exhibition to be withdrawn on Thursday evening, so that those who did not care to look at the races got but little in return for their admission fee on Friday. The attend- ance was not £0 large ason Wednesday, partly owing to the fact that when the stock was with drawn most of the owners with their families went heme with it, thus drawing awaya large crowd of country people. THE TROTTING RACE. There was considerable backing and fillin, in regard to the entries for the great trot, an foratime there was much dissatistaction. In the pubiished list of premiums thie is the word- TH. ing :—** For the fastest stallion, mareor ny trotting in harness, mile heats, best three in five, $300; for the second, $125; for the third, #05.” There are no qualifications in this lan- uage, and owners of tast borses felt justified in ringing them forward to compete for the izes. When they attempted to enter them, jowever, they were told that no horse haying any track record as a racing horse, or yy horse ke by a sporting man for the purpose of racing, would be permitted toenter for the premiame. There were seven entries at first, but as each grew dissatistied three of the horses were withdrawn, leaving only four entered, viz: Flash, by J.T. Sinn; Jobnny Lightfoot, by J. W. Foster; Lady Ger- trude, by Thomas Joyce, and Modoc, by John Baseell, the three latter entering under protest against Sinn’s Flash. The executive committee held @ meeting and adopted an agreement which they compelled all the owners to sign. By the time this was finished and signed it was so late that the race did not commence till 12 o’clock. The horses won their positions in the order above named; but just before the start Foster withdrew his horse trom the race. After the first heat there was not much interest in it, for it was quite mauifest that Flash was having it all his own way. He won the heat in 2:41, and was not pushed at all, only exerting himselt to keep ahead of the others. He won the race in three straight heats. Time, 2:44, 2:46 4 Lady Gertrude second, Modoc third. Arter the € the protests were withdrawn, and the noney was paid over. Letween the heats of the above race A SCRUB RACR, best three in five, was trotted by Willett’s Hoc- tor and Heury Bradiey’s Fanny; won by Fanny being beaten in the first two heats and winning in the last three. Time, 2:54%, 2:55%, 2:43. This was cousidered pretty good time fora country horse right from the cart and plow the week before. THE NEXT RACE ace at 3 o'clock p. m. between Lord 5. Boyd; Jimmie, by J. F. Wil- Patchen, by C. P. Castle; sorrel jor Nicholson. As the horses came to the pole, was ruled out for being a pacer, and not @ trotter, and the other three started in for the race, with $25 to the winner, $15 to the second horse, and $10 to the third; best two in three, mile heats, owners to drive, which Major Nicholson won in two straight heats. Time, 3:06, 3:014. Williams’ horse second, and Lady Fatchen distanced. Lut two entries were made for the mule rac and this fountain of fun was dried up, and thi racipg ceased, and the track was given up to any one desiring to “show off” themselves or their teams. = TRE RACE TRACK upon these ry unds is only about a third of a milein length, and the curve is very sharp, throwing a horse on to his left feet all the tims, and it is conceded that any horse can make from ten to fifteen seconds better time on straight mile track than on thisone. The sec- ond and third horses from the pole also travel several yards more in each heat than the pole horse. The races were all under the care and management ef Col. Washington Bowie. ‘The officers of the fair exerted themselves to please all and make the fair successful. The president, E.J. Hall, and the meron I Spen- cer C. Jones spread free lunches for their friends at headquarters every cay, consisting of eatables, drinkables, and fruitsin abundauce. At the conclusion of the above exercises the people were called to the stand, where the pre- miums were announced and the money paid to all who were present to receive it.
