The efforts recently made by the society upon the plan adopted by them of securing the necessary funds through contingent eubscrip~ tions, have achieved decidedty promising re- sulte. Now that the society have decided upon & distinct mods of appeal! to the patriotism of the American people, and having all the ele- ments of succees, any suggestion proposing any other form of procedure caanot but be produc- tive of confusion and harm. It has bean sa gested in some quarters to bave a particular day set apart for everybody to contribute to- waris the monument, on the assumption that everybody will rush up, like voters at an elec- tion, and ‘leposit their offer: It might well be supposed by many well .meaning people that im such an event the great American heart would respond, and that the necessary half a million would be contributed in a single day- For the information, however, of ail these, it may be stated that such a plan has been several times tried, and always failed. Others, again, as if in- spired with a genius for blocking the whests when once set going, rush into print with criti- cisms decrying the design of the monument, | ana demanding that some other design be | adopted. Singularly enough such unfavorable | criticisms come from New England, and yet | there stands the Bunker Hill obelisk, precisely | in form such as the Washington Monument be when completed, and we opine that any- thing like ridicule of that Boston notion would be met with an avalanche of indignant remon- strance. It should be stated that the objection- able pantheon represented in the engravings of our monument is no part of the original design, but was sketched in by the artist as a sort of fancy finish to the base. It was never seriously intended to add so hideous a feature to the work. (n the contrary, the design is a plain obelisk four hundred and eighty-five feet high, standing upon a terraced base, and nothing else. It seems tous that the right thing to do now is to fall in anc support with unanimity the plan bow on hand, and not confuse the matter with schemes which will be productive of nodefinite Fesults. ‘The society have adopted a coarse perfectly practicable, simple, and safe.
