The result fe that Tue Stax affords unsurpassed advan- tages ae a medium of communication between all classes of the community, in the way of the sdjustment of demand and sapply. -20-- The Washington Mooume: It is satisfactory to know that there is a good Prospect of the completion of the Washington mopument—eo many years the standing dis- grace of the country—and that at no distant day. The efforts recently made by the society upon the plan adopted by them of securing the necessary funds through contingent eubscrip~ tions, have achieved decidedty promising re- sulte. Now that the society have decided upon & distinct mods of appeal! to the patriotism of the American people, and having all the ele- ments of succees, any suggestion proposing any other form of procedure caanot but be produc- tive of confusion and harm. It has bean sa gested in some quarters to bave a particular day set apart for everybody to contribute to- waris the monument, on the assumption that everybody will rush up, like voters at an elec- tion, and ‘leposit their offer: It might well be supposed by many well .meaning people that im such an event the great American heart would respond, and that the necessary half a million would be contributed in a single day- For the information, however, of ail these, it may be stated that such a plan has been several times tried, and always failed. The !ast trial Feeulted in contributions aggregating less than | one bundred dollars. Others, again, as if in- spired with a genius for blocking the whests when once set going, rush into print with criti- cisms decrying the design of the monument, | ana demanding that some other design be | adopted. Singularly enough such unfavorable | criticisms come from New England, and yet | there stands the Bunker Hill obelisk, precisely | in form such as the Washington Monument be when completed, and we opine that any- thing like ridicule of that Boston notion would be met with an avalanche of indignant remon- strance. It should be stated that the objection- able pantheon represented in the engravings of our monument is no part of the original design, but was sketched in by the artist as a sort of fancy finish to the base. It was never seriously intended to add so hideous a feature to the work. (n the contrary, the design is a plain obelisk four hundred and eighty-five feet high, standing upon a terraced base, and nothing else. It seems tous that the right thing to do now is to fall in anc support with unanimity the plan bow on hand, and not confuse the matter with schemes which will be productive of nodefinite Fesults. ‘The society have adopted a coarse perfectly practicable, simple, and safe. They bow want subscriptions from all the secret and other societies: not large amounts, but prompt subscriptions. 1f this is done. the entire half million can be pledged in sixty days, and the monument completed before the cioae of the centennial year. The tide of immigration flows somewhat Weakly this year. Steamers which a a year ago were bringing from 1,00) to 1,59) steerage passengers per trip to New York, now seldom land more than 500. A number of steamers Lave been withdrawn in consejuence of the dullness in passenger business and freights, ssee- Sewaton Faxtow Dewann3 More Tox ‘The burden of Senator Fenton's speech betore the liberal convention‘sts at Albany was tha wantef Tone in American politics. The Graphic bas asignideant cartoon, lettcred “The Political Otrens,” representing President Grant mounted on @ somewhat venerable, but sure-footed and strong muscled, nag, while Unele Sam as rimg-master, hands him a baton lettered “Third term.” Two clowns, “Bourbon Demecrat” and eathern Fire-eater,” stand scowling in the background; while the first says, “Well, 1 declar: iy little repudiation joke didn’t seem to take with the audience;” the other adds, ‘And they actually hissed me when I went through my laughable trick of killing a few niggers." Uncle Sam says to President Grant, “Since these two fools have appeared on the ecene [ think you will bave to boss this establishment another term. In view of the general dullness that sattles down upon the country when Gen. So far we bave been unsaccessfal. They admit that these bonds are guaranteed, princi pai and in- terest, by the United States; they admit that this is all the security which the United States notes pussess, and aif that the circalation of the Bational banks have to make them uniformly good the country over; yet, while neithar of | these classes of notes draw interest, we are told | that our fity-dollar bonds, having precisely the same faith pledged for their security, and 3.65 percent. per annum interest in add‘tion, are ‘worth only about seventy cents on the dollar in theee notes.
