The opposition to Judge Poland doesnot | seem to be very formidable, and it is under- | stood that Mr. Dennison haa virtually with- Grawn from the hopeies< contest. Mr. Hentee was in the last Congress, and made 8 tair but not brilliant record. ee-— Business in Baltimore, the Gazette tte says, was dull during the month of August, and there was but little, if any, improvement to the ahip- | | ping interests. There was an almost entire | cessation of West India trade, owing to the low freights for those porte, and the report that | yellow fever is prevailing ally in the principal | ports of the West Indies, teaded no little to | Add to this result. A wesk later | the first district will ineet at Cambridge, and on the next day the second district at Towsontown. ‘The convention of the fifth district will be held at Anpapolis September 16th. In the sixth district the indications are that Jobn Ritchie, the democratic nominee two years ago, will be renominated. The republicans will probably renominate Hon. L. Lowndes in the rame district. In second Congressional dis trict Merrymau eems to be ahead for the demo- | crate nomination; as does Baker A. Jamison in | the fifth, and Col. A. ‘Taylor, the English radical, is made public, in | which he says, apropos of the recent vote of an | annuity to Prince Leopold: “ if a grant ia pro. posed to pay the debts of the Prince of Wales, then will be the time to make a fight inside the | House of Commons.”” Four state conventions will be held this week. Today the Ohio republicans meet at Colam- | bus, and the Minnesota prohibitionists at Red | Wing.
