Persons leaving the city for the summer, or portion of it, may have Tas Stax sent to ‘Deir address for euch time as they desire, at Be rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, ac- EN re Aa be at oe | ‘asines: office of the paper. —_—_ _ -~see- Where to Advertise, ‘Tes Srax bas now a circulation very much larger than that of all the other city papers | combined, reaching every household in in the | District and s wide range ontside. The result | is that T: i= STAR sfforde unsurpewed advan | tages as a medium of communication between | all classes of the community, in the way of the ‘Adjustment of demand and supply. ‘Fhe Fail Elections. ‘The first of the fail elections in the New Eng- | land states occurs to-day in Vermont. Thecan- | didates to be voted for are agovernor, lieutonant governor, treasurer, and coogressmen. Inthe | second congressional district Dudley 0.Denmisoa ts the independent republican candidate against Judge Poland. Elections in Vermont are now | biennial. At the last state election (Septem. he vote for governor was: republi- ition, 16,613. At the Novem- | , the vote for Greeley fell ta | republican vote was not per- | ly Gecreaved. Congressmen were chosen that sear in November, and there was bolt | inet Poland, the vote reauiting: Poland, is eele, independent republican, 2,92 Pierce, democrat. 2 The legisiatare of Vermont to be elected will choose a United States Senator, vice Georg? F. Edmunds. In the last iegislature there were 2i7 republicans and 22 opposition. The republicans will donbtless elect their teket throughont by the average majority in | “of” years. The repablican eandidate for | governor is Judge Peck, and their Congression- | al nominees are Messrs. Joyce, Poland and Hendee. Mr. Josce is the nominee in the Rut. | land district (3¢) to succeed Mr. Willard. He | bas no opposition in his party, though there has | been some disatfection amongst the Willard men. The opposition to Judge Poland doesnot | seem to be very formidable, and it is under- | stood that Mr. Dennison haa virtually with- Grawn from the hopeies< contest. Mr. Hentee was in the last Congress, and made 8 tair but not brilliant record. ee-— Business in Baltimore, the Gazette tte says, was dull during the month of August, and there was but little, if any, improvement to the ahip- | | ping interests. There was an almost entire | cessation of West India trade, owing to the low freights for those porte, and the report that | yellow fever is prevailing ally in the principal | ports of the West Indies, teaded no little to | Add to this result. More vessels isft for Europe | Guripg the month than in the previous month with cargoes. Coai freights for the north were | very low, still a great deal of coal lett for the northern ports. The flour and grain trade has been good the past month, but prices have besn | tow; but the month closed with prices showing | Sn upward tendency. The sttendance at the | Corn and Fiour Exchange has been good, con- sidering the reason, and the receipts of wheat | Were larger than ever before in the same space of ime. In six days of last week the receipts | #ggtegated upward of 400,000 bushels of wheat. Trade geversily gave signs of animation at the olese of the month, and the aspect of the com- mercial situation is much more encouraging. — The canvass for the Congressional nomina- tions in Maryland is becoming very active with the democrats throughout the state with the near approach of the conventions. The first to ee Meld ia thet of the sixth district, which will ‘meet at Hagerstown to-morrow. A wesk later | the first district will ineet at Cambridge, and on the next day the second district at Towsontown. ‘The convention of the fifth district will be held at Anpapolis September 16th. The ‘third aod fourth districts (comprising Baltimore city) wii | meet September i7th. In the sixth district the indications are that Jobn Ritchie, the democratic nominee two years ago, will be renominated. The republicans will probably renominate Hon. L. Lowndes in the rame district. In second Congressional dis trict Merrymau eems to be ahead for the demo- | crate nomination; as does Baker A. Jamison in | the fifth, and Col. Clement Sallivane in the firet. +see- ‘The wily effort of the McLane men in the | oop Maryland Fourth Congressional District to in- | duce Swann to stump the district in joint dis | cussion with their man, don’t work. Mr.Swann | declines on the ground that being both members Of the same party there siould be uo political | Gitferences to justify a joint discussion, and if such discussion is at all ad with their political oppo: Dadly put; and so if Mr. Me | speaker be will not bave the opportanity to il- | lustrate the fact to Mr. Swan's disadvantage. The English republicans are inclined to take | a step forward. A significant letter from P. A. ‘Taylor, the English radical, is made public, in | which he says, apropos of the recent vote of an | annuity to Prince Leopold: “ if a grant ia pro. posed to pay the debts of the Prince of Wales, then will be the time to make a fight inside the | House of Commons.”” Four state conventions will be held this week. Today the Ohio republicans meet at Colam- | bus, and the Minnesota prohibitionists at Red | Wing. To-morrow the Nebraska republicans | Wiil meet at Lincoln to nominace candidates fur | Governor and other state officers, and the inde- pend+nt reform party of Missouri will assem- bie In convention at Jefferson city.
