He is, no doubt, an bonorable business man, and estimable in ali his private relations, but we see no reason to change our opinion ss to his fitness_—or rather unfitness—for the position of School Trustee. No doubt he is active, but when that actirity is displayed so largely in behalf of changes in text-books, the Parents who bave to pay for the books can afford to dispense with such effusive energy. But not to dwell upon the matter, the whole question of his qualifications, culture, tone, veracity, &c., may be judged by the following effusion from his pen, printed verbatim, spellatim, et punctuatim. ar Po ee ee] , concerning the question of | « changi Sk ‘ies,”” done the jastice to those ‘who were favor of changing Genes | | ies, of stating that they were no doubt | Ly st,” and you will no doubt beso just as to ss few pt pone ee Dead rng “on question of ing , e8- pecially since for thet present eet, the prop- See eet tee entertained by a majority Of . ‘What I desire to say is simply this, that it ts somewhat remarkable that those members of the Board who were eo much interested in hav- | ing the present bies in use (Cornall’s) adopted as a Text- Book, and show so mach in- terest in retain’ it, have not even attempted | to defend the book for its merits as a tex-book. She is 4,555 tons burden, length 455 feet, and is | considered 8 model for strength, comfort and | speed. On the trial trip she averaged a speed of fourteen knots an hour, with 1,600 tons of dead weight on board. ‘The history of the Cunard company is # mat. ter of some interest. Mesers. Burns, of Glas- gow, and Messrs. Maclver, of Liverpool, when they abandoned the use of sailing vesseis, com- menced the employment of steamships so far back as 1824. They uave been engaged in the business ever since. Along with the late sir Samuel Cunard, Bart., they tormed their trans atlantic line, which has become so famous. Under a postal contract with the Admiralty, they dispatched their first steamer to North America in 1840. Commencing their American mailservice with s few steamers, they have constantly kept up with the times, and now their total fleet numbers no fewer than forty- ine steamships, comprising a tonnage of 90,000 tons, and engines to the amount of nearly 15,000 Borse power. This isa navy of itself greater than that of most of the maritime powers of the world. It is all owned by three familits—those of Messrs. Burns, of Glasgow; Messrs. Macli ver, of Liverpool, and Mr. William Cunard, now of London. ——_—___--+e-+- _ ManyLamp POLITics.—The Alleghany county republican primary meeting for the | Inmbia, tdeceased.
