About two years ago @ building association was organi: in the town, aud the result bas been tae erection of several dwellings with the aidfarnished by the association, aud the im- provements on Main street are mainly due to this mutual benefit arrangement. The er hotei has, during the past season, erected an additional two-story dwelling within @ tew feet of the old house, and connected it therewith, for the accommodation of lady boarders, while the gentlemen occupy the old building. A new stable has also been built at the hotel to supply the place ct the one burned down last year just previous to the holding of the annual fair in town. Near the upper end of the village, and just west of the Court-house, the Presbyterians have put up a fine church. A little more than & year ago this society lost its place of worship by fire, and shortly afterward projected the new one, which will be finished in a couple of weeks. Itis of Gothic ‘a , with a ve neat tower. The whole 1s of bright red brick, slated, and neatly ornamented, rather low and small, bat quite imposing in’ comparison with the’ sur- roundings. Such an ornament to the town should have been erected in some more eligible osition, for its beauty is half concealed by ing crowded in between several small frame houseson a side street. On the left of the pulpit isa marble shield set into the wall, bearing the following inscription: “In wy of John Mives, D.D., for 27 years the faithful and beloved minister of Cabbin John, Rockville, and Bethesda. The windows are of stained lase. A fine chandelier, in th tique style, containing twelve lights, hangs suspended in the center of the room, and was a present from Mrs. Henrietta, of Georgetown. The elevation of the town, the pure air and sweet water, and the good society of Rockville, combine to make it very desirable for a summer resting place. At the lower end of the town isthe Catholic eburch, under Father Mackiu, and near by is the school above mentioned. ‘Previous to the opening of the school afestival and fete cham- petre is to be held on the 25th, 26th, and 27th of this month for the benelit of the scnool, partic- ulars of which will be advertised in Tue Stag. Ha is described as an amiable, temperate, steady young man; prospective heir toa considerable sum, bis grandmother being wealthy and far advanced in years. He had habitually played with a pistol, and on Tuesday he went to his room and began to handle the weapon. A re- port was heard. The inmates of the house hur- ried to the apartment and found a Ball in 2 pool of blood, with his face disigared almost beyond recognition. It is sup; that the pis- tol was charged with powder and wad only. It is not known whether the shooting was acciden- tal or with suicidal intent. It is believed, how- ever, that while attempting to blow into the te of the pistol to ascertain whether it was loaded, he accidentally discharged the weapon. He was eighteen years of age.
