AnoTHuER CLERICAL SCANDAL. — Develop- ments in the social world have suddenly burst torth, which, when they come to be generaily known, will ‘cause almost as many breasts to ache, and quite as general dismay, as the Beecher scandal. ‘The offending party in this instance occupies am ecclesiastical position of more responsibility and greater exaltation than does the pastor of Piymouth church. In case there can be no doubt about the character of the offence. It isone that a husband cap neitber ‘pardon nor condone,” and will no! ad- rit of compromise or adjustment by mutual friends. A Missouri Marder Mystery TERRIBLE FATR OF A MAN AND WIFE. Sr. Loris, August 19.—In relation to the mur- T of B. H. Johnson and wife, at North Lex- ington, Sunday night, it appears that Johnson had not lived happily with his wife. Some months ago he left tor Kentucky, but returned suddenly on Sunday evening, accompanied by Lorenzo Johnson, a cousin, one mding @ fine horse ard the other a male, and stopped at the house of the mother of Johnson's wife. In the night pistol shots were beard tn the room occu- pied by Jobnson and wife, and Johnson was found with a bullet hole in his heal and his skull broken, and his wife's head had been smashed to jelly with an axe. A letter was found on a table addressed to Lorenzo -lobason and signed by B. H. Johnson, in which he says he committed the deed, and had determined to ing Livingston, on his wife’s infidelity. The statement in the let- ter isnot believed, however, for the reason that Jobnson could not write, and it ixsuepected that Lorenzo is the murderer, though there is no positive evidence against him. Lorsnzo was subsequently arrested for horse stealing and taken to Richmond, where it was feared he would be lynched. "The verdict of the coro- ner’s jury, however, did not charge Lorenz with the murder, and the case is still invelred in ystery. ——— ee Charley Ross THE IDENTITY OF TEE UDELL noY. Tae Paxwsvivania Coat Trape.—The coal trade continues, like almost all of the grea! interests of the country, much depremad. 1 deed, #0 far as production goes, no improvement ts anticipated until after the expiration of the present month. The combination of great pro- mpanies in daly last de- sdition of the coal market, that a shortening of the prodaction that month, fifty per cent, apd for the month of August # shortening of production and shipment of alike percentage, would furnish a supply of coal equal to the cewand. This decision was toapply to each of all the companies in the comvination, except such as might be short in their allotted proportion, which would of course have the right tomake vp such deticit if they so desired. The fifty per cent. reduction in July was made all around, and on Thuredsy of this week, in order to make the reduction and stupment for Angust ¢ ually complete, the carrying trade Will generally ccase tn all the authracite regions for the remainder of the mouth.
