From 250 to 420 pounda of coal-oll would be required to feed the furnace, and complete cremation would te effected in an hour andahalf. Connecting with the farnace was another apparatus for con- densing the and smoke. Not the slightest smell would be perceptibte, and the whole basi- ness would be conducted with due st for respect the feelings of relatives and friends. The society at present numbers 450 mem- bers, and an effort will be made to have it in- . ¥ A VIRGINIA SNAKE Story.—A gentleman living in the lower part of Caroline county, in- formed us the other day that a mammoth snake was kille.! two weeks ago at Robert Ryland’s mill in King William county, Oar informant got the particulars and size ofthe monster from a relative of his who li ear the mill. The snake was black. and measured fifteen feet in length, nine inches in circumference, and was either four or six inches between the eyes. Our informant had forgotten which. His snakeship had been a resident in and around the mill for probably two years, and had lived principally ce. Hebad often been seen, but no teps had been taken to get rid of him a8 he did a good work in keeping the mill clear of rats and mice. However, it 6 known throughout the neighborhood that such a mon- ster was strolling about the mill, and the neigh- bors became unwilling to send their children for meal, and the colored people were so frigth- ened that they would not think of visiting the place for fear of being swallowed alive. It issaid that the mill was losing custom so pore | that the proprietor had a sharp look out for his snakeship and the first opportunity offered he was killed, after which he was measured and the dimensions given as above stated.—Freder- icksburg Ledger. CONSTABLE SHoT.—On Wednesday evening last Constable Jeremiah Hozier, of Princess Anne county, arrested s negro by the name of Henry Woodhouse, alias:E@wards, who is sup- to have been connected with a Fae, of very ied the ighwaymen. Woodhouse submitte quietly to the arrest, and accompani officer peaceably until almost within the limits of Berkley, when Mr. Hozier took a step or two in advance of bis prisoner. The negro took the opportunity, and drawing a pistol, fired at his captor, the bal! taking effect in the back of his head, after which, a his shot to have been fatal, he made escape. The pistol shot and the cries of the wounded man speedily summoned assistance, and he was taken to his residence. He will probably recover.—Norfolk Virginian, 24th. Gien- denning, of Jersey City, was set down for last Thursday; but as the first case against the ac- cused is for bastardy, Justice Aldridge was ad- vised that no examination could be legally held till the chief witness in the case gave birth toa child. That obstacle is pow removed, for Miss Pomeroy gave birth to a female child yesterday morning. Justice Aldridge determined to hold an examination as soon as the mother is able to go abroad. In the meantime the accused pastor is spending his vacation at Saratoga, but he has given ample security for bis appearance when required.
