EVENING STAR. tg 2m rouxns CROSBY 5S. HOYES...,... Editor, Reading Matter on Every Page cis WASHINGTON OITY: FRIDAY... July 24, 1874, The Star by Mail. Collyer, the pugilist, who is now in training for a battle with Edwards, and who possesses more thau the average intelligence =) ot the rer eee men of bis class, recently gave a reporter ai interesting account of the daily exercises he | takes to get himecif into good physical condi tion. In regard to bis diet, Collyer said that the old notion that pugilists mast eat raw meat has been exploded, and that to be bene- ficial all food must be properly eaoked. He rises every morning aout haif-past three O'clock and takes a light shower bath of strong brine, and is then rubbed dry with Turkish towels, finishing up with a good rubbing with a horse brush, until his skin glows like a cherry. He then dons his flannels, and after drinking a glass of sherry with an egg in it he starts out oa arambie of four or five miles over the hills, re- turning sboat seven o'clock. He then eats his breakfast, which usually consists of a mutton ebop, a couple of soft boiled eggs, bread a day old, & cup of tea, no sugar or salt; in fact, he uses no seasoning in any of his food. After breakfest he takes a light pair of dumb bells and saunters out for his reguiar constitutional or daily walk, which usually consists of about fif- teen miles. He comes in on a deadrun on the last few miles, and sweat runs from every pore. He then ente: rub him as dry as @ bone with Tarkish | towels. When dry s couple of bucketfuls of | P20P08aLs FoR brine are dasbed over him to close his pores & closed room and is divested of | ry portion of his wardrobe, and his trainers | and tone bis skin, snd he is then again dried. As | soon ss be puts on dry clothes he takes a little exercise with the dumb bells to bring out a gen- tle glow, after which he stretchesjon a ham- mock swung under the trees and reads the pa- pers until dinner fs announced. His dinner is of roast beef, a little fish once ina while—in fact, Wood. whatever his appetite craves that reason telis him is not injurious to the system. Soon after dinner he goes to the gymnauum, where he practices with the dumb-bells, spars with bis trainer, and swings Indian clabs until four o’clock, when he takes a two-hours’ tramp over the hills. After supper he takes more feet in brine, and retires promptly at nine. On being asked if he thought s severe course of training did not injure a person’s stamina, Collyer replied:—“f don’t think it does; in fact, I think that if a business man would put Dimself through a moderate course of training every summer it would adu ten years to his life and immeasurably to his comfort. The trouble mmastic exercise, after which he bathes his | | with pugilists and other sportsmen Is that while | they are training they of necessity deprive themselves of every indulgence until they get their systems thoroughly purified, and then when the event for which they have prepared is over they think, ‘Now I'm a free man, and I'll do as I please,’ and they rush into drinking and debauchery, and the revction is too much | for their constitution, and the inevitable result is a lossof stamina. I think thata man who | trains and then allows himself to drift back to | } his natural course of life by degrees, is never injured, and always bettered, by the process.” The p rincipal argument used a Dr. Words- worth, bishop of Lincoln, against cremation, viz., that it would destroy man’s faith in the re- surrection of the body, does not seem to be very conclusive with most people. The Richmond Whig says that many thousands of human beings have been lost at sea and been the food of fishes. Many have also failen victims to the flames. Those we bury become the prey of worms. The same Omnipotence which can col- | lect together and reanimate the scattered re- amains of these can as easily collect, reform and reanimate the cust of those whose bodies have been subjected to cremation. The faith that believes one will as implicitly believe the other. ——-~ +*ee. —- -— The p reply to her husband's charges will be found in another column. It is a thoroughly womanly document; but, save that it throws some light on their domestic iffe, it does not haya a very important bearing on the case. Li makes rather | @ bad chowing for Mr, Tilton, as aman and a husband, to be sure; but as the matter stands at pees it is net Mr. Tilton who is on trial. — <6 —_— i aa man out west has nominated | “Hon. H. J. Jewett, now of the Erie railroad, for | President of the United States, just as Col. ‘Thos. A. Scott, of the Pennsylvania road, was Bominated for the same office a couple of years ago. Thisis allright. It pleases railroad men to be nominated for President by the newspa- pers; besices it is supposed to make them more liberal with free passes. -s0e- — He bas thought better of it, has Gen. Farns- Worth, and will not run for Congress as an in- dependent candidate in the 4th Illinois dis- trict. A Chicago paper announces that he has opened & law office in that city, “where he will attend to legal tnstead of Congressional busi- ness hereafter.” A good advertisement ina newspaper pays no fares on railroads; costs nothing tor hotel bills; gives away no boxes of cigars to customers, or merino Cresees to customers’ wives; drinks no whisky under the bead of traveling expenses; ut goes st once and all the time about its busi- ness free of expense.
