EVENING STAR. MARKET NOTICES. CROSBY S&S. NOYES....... Editor, Largest Circulation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON OITY; | NDAY......000+ +.» July 6, 1874. The Star by Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or ny portion of it, may have Taz STAR sent to their address for sach time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, ac- companied by the money, should be sent to the business office of the paper. Where to Advertise. Tue STAR bas now acirculation very much larger than that of all the other city papers combined, reaching every household in the District and a wide range outside. The result is that Tax Stak affords unsarpassed advan- tages as a medium of communication between all classes of the community, in the way of the adjustment of of demand and supply. -2o-- The ‘Market. hease Without undertaking to decide upon the | merits of the controversy between the market- men and the Center Market Company, we may | say that it will be a matter of serious regret should this market be broken up as the great central market of the city, through a failureon either side to deai with the questions at issue with good temper and a spirit of fairness and | justice. ‘This old market-piace, which dates from the earliest history of the city, has come, by the central convenience of its position, as well as from habit and association, to be recog- nized as the great general market of Washington, Situated at the junction of the two main busi. hess streets of the city, Pennsylvania avenue and 7th street, and with lines of street railroad Tadiating from this central point to every part of the city, and to Georgetown, Mount Pleas- ant, Uniontown, &c., &c., itof course has ex- ceptioral advantages of position for the accom- modaticn of the public. And it also affords a convenient central market place for country- men coming in by all the leading county roads. the 7th street, Bladensburg, Tennallytown, Aqueduct Bridge, Long Bridge, and Navy Yard Toads, as well as a landing place for produce by the Potomac boats, the Baltimore and Potomac railroad, and the ratlroads South. if, with all these advantages, and with the Additional advantage of one of the most spa- cious, substantial and convenient market build- ings in the country, the marke company shouid | come to such a serious disagreement with the Stall-bolders as to cauce the latter to abandon the market and seek less convenient and cen- tral quarters elsewhere, it would seem to show | & sad lack of temper and discretion on the part ot somebody. It is hardly to be supposed that that the marketmen would make this change at so much loss and inconvenience to themselves unless they feit they had serions grievances to complain of at the hands of the company. It is probably time, as the company sssert, that the law authorizes them to resell the stands at this time, but in corsideration of the large | Ww bonuses paid for the stallstwo years ago, and the duliness of business at present we think | the company as a matter of fairness and | equity, shouki have been content with get- ting a regular rental from the dealers until, at least, a sufficient time had elapsed to give the latter some return for the heavy bonus already paid for the etal's. The | law allowing the company the right to resell was perhaps necessary to give them requisite | legal control over their property, but 1t seems | to usa bardship in the matter of equity, anda blunder in the way of policy to enforce that right summarily upon the dealers. | The Wsshington marketmen are, as a class, a | “golid,” self-respecting class of men, and any | attempt to coerce them is agreat mistake. We only express the general wish of the community | in boping that a fair and equitable adjastment | Of the ditticultics between the dealers and the | company, and that we may speedily s2e the | marketmen back again at the old, familiar stands. | ———— ‘There will always be something to talk about, | quite evidently. The cremation business, the comet, the Beecher-Tilton matter, and the hy- Grophobia scare have had their seven days | innings, and now comes up for public attention | “& Portentons War Cloud” in the shape of serious difficulties between the French and | German governments. According to a London | correspondent, it would appear that the French | military authorities have recently resolved upon fortifying the eastern frontier, uow wholly protected, without a single fortress between | Paris op the one hand and Metz and Strasburg | on the other capable of detaining an invading army twenty-four hours. it was decided that new fortifications should be constructed at Ver- Gun, that a first-class fortress should be con- structed at Langres, and that what is called the trowie de Belfort should be made impassable by | | | @system of permanent works. Upon learning Of this resolution, the German government in- formed France that these forts conid not ba | built. “If this be true,” says the correspond | ent, “tt is an interference in the internal con- | cerns of France which ts equally indefensible | and impolitic. These fortifications are purely | defensive works. Their construction cannot be | considered as conveying even the most distant | befor bint of a menace against Germany; their ne cessity ins military point of view is acknowl- edged even by Prussian military writers.” It bas often been said, and not wituout reason, that the Germans would uever permit France to complete her military organization. But the | construction ef three large fortresses to cover Paris, along a frontier line something over one hundred and fifty miles in length, is a purely defensive measure; and if it be really trae that Pruseia has eet her face against it then a re- newal of the war is at the mercy of the least in- cident. It is hinted that if this pretension is persevered in by Pr the other great powers of Europe will interfere for the protection of France; the more especially as the Prussians, instead of dis. mantling Metz and Strasburg have been vastly extending and strengthening the fortifications there. Bnt very likely the size and blackness | Of this war-cloud has been exaggerated in the | exigency for news in the dall seaso: — — We shall expect to hear that a ‘good deal of Gamage was done to the growing crops in the country on the track of the storm Saturday renin, 1. 0. 0.
