C., SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 1874. ALEXANDER; OONDITOR URBIS. Fear not, Alexander! Already in Fame’s everlasting tome, Thy name hath been securely writ; Nor shall the craft of men dishonor it, O Romulus of a better Rome! See where doth stand Proud on the ivied ruins of the Past, The jocund Fature, whose glad-waving band Ek quently bids behold On-coming in a shower of minstrelsy, The happy age of gold! Superb young Titaness, With haughty, flowing tress Backward to And wonder-lighted eyes that look away Where hither troop, in beautiful array, The centuries to be. © glorious, 0 mighty pageantry! Ste beckons unto merasd T arise: And standing there, she giveth to my gaze ‘The splendoF of the land” the grandest of the sea: Through golden vistas of the clouds uncarled, Sboweth to my awe-struck eye The wonder of the world : The hoary mountains bowed with many days, The lordly rivers where they roam, ‘The serried armies of the tress, The far careering of the leaguered foam, Whitening to the Hebrides, The desert’s burning miles, The burricane’s black wing, ‘The gray old ocean wandering Among myriad isles. She stands in awful grandeur there, ‘The proud young Titaness, And her backward flowing trees Gleams like a meteor’s hair. Loftily she waves again Her luminous and persuasive hand, And all the gracious land Smiles with fair women, glows with noble men. Across the plains the harvest waves its gold; On silver lakes the shaliops glide; Over the bridges the long trains are rolled; From port to port the cautious vessels ride; The giad old harbors, opening wide A welcome shelter from the sea’s alarms, The commerce of the world enfeld In hospitable arms. And here are waving groves, and there are nestling bowers, And hamlets on the hbill-sides, beautifal and ite, And orchards rich with fruit, and gardens gay with flowers, And all the piceannt pieces that invite The happy birds, and with their music ring. But ah, more wonderfal than all, And dearest to the human heart, In sylvan dresses lovingly bedight, ‘The grand old cities glittering. And peerless beauty of this festival— O Heaven and Earth, how fair to look upon! Behold afar that miracle of-art, America’s own darling child, Proud Washington ! How like a happy dream she is, reposing there ! So almost fearful in her loveliness, ‘The heart of Angelo might be begutled; And Beauty would herself confess Here shone a city far beyond compare. Fear not, Alexander! For lo, the proud young Titaness In awful grandeur stands, And upto me she seems to bless Yon city with enthusiastic hands : And now to these admiring eyes of mine, Diecovers there, among the bronze and marble groves Of statues, arches, fountains, colonnades, One statue which the clty loves; And shall forever love, through all her long decades: That statue, it is thine! Fear not, Alexander!
