THE GROWTH OF THE CHURCH. ‘The communication of Bishop Whittingham reaa before the convention yesterday, states that his impressions, derived from various 8 urces of in‘ormation, on the whole are favor able. Under discouraging circumstances, for the most part the work outside of our cities hae been carried on without losing ground, while in Baltimore and Washington and the immedi- ately adjoming suburban districts rigorous growth has been taking place. At no time has there ever been in Baltimore an equally gene- rally diffusive life, growth, and multiform ac tivity im the congregativns, missions, schools, and other charitable enterprises. Laity and clergy have seemed to be vieing with each other in eagerness to be up and doing, Alluding to the churches of Baltimore he ag * : Thus have the five places regularly open for public wor- ship when lcame to Haltimore grown to thirty- tour, with four otherson the immediate outskirts within twomiles. The clergy tist of the diocese death through the past year, bas recovered itself to the full extent of that of ali Maryland before division. We were, bishops and all in 1867, of the number of the “great fishes” taken in the mystic net ‘a hundred and flity and three.” We are now, two bishoos, a bundrcd and forty-one presbyters, and twelve deacons—two more than the undivided diocese could count seven years ago, Our changes in the year have been fewer than I have ever known in the same period—less than ten in all | of every kind.” RITUALISM DISCUSSED. Under a circular call sent to every delegate, signed by Rev. A. P. Stryker, of St. Baraabag chureh, Kev. T. U. Dadley, of Baltimore, and others, a conference meeting was held last night in the Sabbath-school room of the Chareh of the Epiphany, to discuss the question of ritaal- ism. This call is as follo “The undersigned, impressed with the solemn magnitude of the questions which must com> before the general convention in October nest, are alike impressed with the desirableness of an terclange of views am ng thoxe members o! the approaching diocesan convention who wou'd have those questions settled upon conservative church principles. We balieve that the diocese of Maryland desires such action by the general | convention as will coutrol alt extreme practice and teaching, and we believe that only conter- ence is needed to secure the election by this diocese of represeutstives who will labor and vote for such action. This circular appears to have met with con- siderable disfavor, and 4 repiy has been made, as (ollowe: * The undersigned clergymen and taydele- | gates to the approaching diocesan conven‘ion, basing received a circular purporting to : ism of the diocese of Mary- and yet proposing such action as will in- juee important changes in the existing laws the eburch, desire to ex press our disapproval of any such means of influencing beforehand tie mind of theconvention. We feel persuaded that a lerge majority of the loyal and conserva- t ve churchmen of the diocese deprecate com- mittiog themselves or those to whom they may entruet the interests of the church to any pre- determined line of action. ‘ We believe it to be the desire of all such to select as their deputies to the next general con- vention men svfficiently well known ty te the guidance of their own duscretion in all questions to be introduced there. *« We think it will establish a dangerous pre- cedent to determine In an informal meetin during aud outside of the diocesan convention, matters which ought properly to be settled only | , before the convention itself. nature of the course proposed in the circular ailuded to above, we have felt ourselves called upon to express them to the clergy and lay del- egates, respectfully ask them to suspend judgment upon matters referred to in the cir- cular until they shall be regularly brought ba- fore them in the convention for their action.” Signed by Rev. J. S. B. Hodge, D.D.; Kev. C. K. Nelson, D. D.; Rey. Jas. Chipchase, Rev Wm. T. Johnston, Kev. Kichard C. Hal by Messrs. William G. Harrison, F. W. Brane, eo. W. finges, Chas. H. Wyatt and Dan’l M. Thomas. None except members of the convention were allowed to be Present at the meeting last night. The discussion last night is represented to have been very exciting, but it is generaliy conceded that “the majority of those present were against high church practices. The result of the conference was the choosing of ten persons | toselect the delegates, whose names are to be submitted to the convention here for election, to represent this diocese in the general conven- tien to be held in New Yoak in October next. The action is not satisfactory to many, and a further discussion of the question is expected to-day. To-day’s Seani ‘The convention reassembied at 10 o'clock this morning, and one hour was spent in devotional exercises. The roll was called and 181 delegates an- swered to their names. ‘The chair announced the presence of the ven- erable Bishop Johns, of Virginia, who was escorted to a seat on the right of the chair, and being introtuced took the hand of Bishop Pink- ney, and said: “I feel as it coming home after | a long absence, but I miss the faces of many dear ones—with the warmest heart wishes for the peace aud prosperity of the diocese.” The chair announced tnat the portion of the assistant bishop's address relating tothe Han. vab Moore academy would be referred to a committee com posed of Messrs. Sam'l G. Way- map, ©. M. Stewart and F. W. Broune. The question of postponing the unfiaished business of the last convention, insteal of taking sy # the current business, was discussed at some length. Dr. Hutton, from the committee on admission of new churches and parishes, made a repo-t, mmendi with a resolution, reco: ag that St. Mary’s church,of this city, be admitted into St Jobu’s parish, in compliance with petition of said church. The resolation was adopted. Also, the petition of St. Andrew's and the As- cension churches of this city for an extension of their bourdaries, recommending that the petition be granted; adopted. Several reselutions ot the same tenor affect- ing other portions of the diocese were also opted. The question as to admitting the church of the Messiah of Baltimore into the dlocese, was made (he special order after the election of del- egates to U ‘a! convention. An election by ballot of the regalar diocesian standing comi (the advisory committee to the Bishop) was then held.
