Tae THRATEES.—A rare dramatic treat was offered the patrons of Ford’s Opera House last night, being the production of Shakespeare's [ mg love tragedy, ‘Romeo and Juliet,” with at beautiful woman and accomplished ac- tress, Mre. J. B. com- . Booth, as Juliet, and the tal- ented young American actor, Mr. Wheelock, as Romeo. The cast was otherwise very strong, and the result was one of the best and most sat- isfactory performances ef a Shakespearean play that has ever been seen here. The twenty-two thorough musicians ile dancers, and excellent delineators of Ethiopian eccentricities who make up Carncross & Dixey’s Minstrels gave a most enjoyable entertainment at the National Theatre last evening, and were the recipients of long and loud applause from @ delighted audience. The programme was full of good things, the best of which will be repeated this evening. he sagacious manager of the Theatre Co- =~ bas made a decided hit in the Jardin Mabille and Parisian can-can, to say nothing of the ether lively features of this week’s pro- gramme. Thomas Smitb, colored, larceny of 60 cents worth of coal from a yardin Georgetown; @1 and costa. A HANDY MAN. Theodore Handy was charged with assault and Pccape' & on J. O'Neal, who lives in Foundry alley. Mr. O'Neal testified that last night while at supper Handy entered his house, and appeared to be intoxicated. He invited him to eat aupper, when Handy picked up a plate from the table and dashed it at him, (witness.) He then caught up plate after plate and threw them at witness and wife. Not satistied with this, he got hold of an_axe and chased all of them out of the house. Witness and wife went for the police, and found Officer Heinline, who in attempting to take him was assaulted by Handy witha junk bottle, when a rough and tumble fight took place. Handy made a state- ment, which was entirely too thin for the court, who lectured the culprit on the evil of his ways, reminding hi that he had been before the court too often for much consideration, and then sentenced him to sixty days’ in jail’ Ho was also arraigned for assaulting and resistin and lately it out he pistol in hand, n, | Officer Heinline, and sentenced to sixty days! more in jail. Wilson Griffin was charged with throwing stones and other missles on South Carolina av- | enue. He says that he planned the murders with the ob- ject of plundering during the absence of Mr. and Mrs. Hamnet. The first victim was the adopted boy, fourteen years old; he next killed the younger girl, four | og old, and then her sister, eight years old. Mr. and Mrs. Hamnet returned late in the evening, when he killed both of them with an axe. The murderer then changed his clothing, and having secured all the money in the house, fifteen dollars, he sat fre to it and started for Pittsburg on foot. He says he was out of his mind when he committed the crimes. MURDER ON A STEAMBOAT.—A dispatch re- ceived in Milford, Del., on Saturday last, stated that Mr. John Straus, "9 iro. Mr. Straus was engaged as travelling agent for two large firms in Philadelphia, and had gone ona collecting tour through the west, and on Friday night he was found murdered, supposed for his money, as it was shown by memoranda on bis person that he had collected some #2.000, while but $145 was found upon him.
