_EVENING STAR._ > CROSBY 8. NOTES...,...Ealtor. Largest Circalation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON OITY: PRIDAY. . May 1, 1874. Where to Advertise, ‘Tire STAR, which, from its start, has been the pa- per of the people, has, by the paias taken to mate ft mssfe, relinbie, newsy and acceptable visitor to every family ,gained @ popalarity amcngst ali classes of the @ mumanity second to that of a> newspaper in the country with the same area of population. Kecp- ing fall pace with the éxtraordinary growth of the ity, and reschivg every household in the District, inge outside, The Staz hasnow at- tained a ctrealation very much larger than that of all the otter city datlies combined. This is no idle claim, but one we are prepared to establish st any time by “beoks and papers.” And this circalation, se stated above, is universal, reaching the busi- nese community, the wealthy, the groat indus- triml forces, the skilled mechanics, the laboring men, the bankers, the merchauie, the house- keepers, the government employes, the Oongress- m short, there is no circle where Tux is not = regular and welcome guest. The is that Tue Star affo nnsar pasted ef- Santages as 8 medium of communication between Sil classes of the community, in the way of the ad pusiment of demand and supply. Dana. ‘The New York Graphic of yesterday has the fcllowing by way of comment upon the attempt of Dara to ev the damaging ebarges of dames E. Caidwell, of the Phi jadelphis jowelry firm We give from this morning's the state- ment of Wililam P. Wood, touching his rela tens wih James Caldwell. it will be noticed: . That Wood has nothing to sa: respecting caidwet ‘s charge that he (Wood) was paid $2,000 us the representative of Charies A. Dana for suppressing an article respecting the alleged frauds on the government by that firm. 2. That Charles A. Dana himself has not de- nied that Wood was his agent in approaching James F. Caldwell to get money from him for uppresting an article which would have in- Ub morning papers as coming fromJ smes E well betore the Ways and Means Com we naturally supposed that Wood had simply been making use of the reputation of the Sun to “ strike” the firm, without the knowledge of Mr. Dana. But what is curious in the case is (that Mr. Dana has not seen fit to deny his rela- tionship with Wood, while the latter, evidently at the insigation of the Sun, makes sach ex- plavations as he cap in the columns of that journal. Of course Mr. Dana will come out all right eventually; but ought not this case siuw him how much easier it is to mak cn eeny cbarges than to disprove them—how difticalt it is cecasionally for honest men to explaim what may be merely accidental appearances—and bow careful journalists should be in regard to admitting to their columns ebarges against pri- vate individuals, unless the testimony is over- whelming and susceptible ot legal proof. In the meantime ali that the Sun has to say hereaiter touching corruption at Washington or elsewhere must be taken with maay grains of allowance. The allegations may be instigated by strikers, such as this Wood is alleged to be, and who have relations with Mr. Dass which that geutieman may find it dificult to explain. es Tae TuReatayen Stace ww New Yor«.— ‘The Laborer’s Union meeting of New York on Wednesday evening adopted a resolution to strike as soon as the attempt shall be made to require ten hours work per day; and it was farther resolved that so long as the strike may continue, $3 a week shall be paid to marriei, and 85 to single men from the funds of the Union. The master mechanics are divided, the Express says,on the question, as the master marons refuse to state whether they will abide by the resolution adopted by the master me- ehavics on April Tth fitiog the days of labor at ten hours after May ith. Journeymen have held meetings expressing their opposition to this new regulation, it being. as they say, “in antagonism with the established law of both the state amd the national governments.” Among the most decided opponents are the bricklayers, stonemasons, ptasterers and stone cutters. 1 is understood, therefore, that there Will be no anited action on Mouday next, ana employers will be at liberty to hire men either for teu or cight hours per day, as they may find to be the most advantage as. ome of the Unions have agreed, it is stated, to allow th= members the option of working ten hours if they cannot obtain employment at eight hours, th: to this being the brickiayers, mason * unions. yeten bas evinced a decidedly par san spirit against the District government in bis dispatches, but he has the fairncas to say of the testimony of Gov. Shepherd yesterday “The mystery of the two days’ secret session of the District Investigating Committee was in some part made known te-day, and while the de pments bave been het mt amg ag ae and embarrassing to Governor Si erd. but justice to him to say that his testimony upon \he matter was received by all fair-minded men as truthful in every particular. = * Gor- ernor Shepherd was deeply moved while givin his testimony in reference to his life-long friend nd business associate, and there was much sym- patby in the committee room while he was upon the stand, but the straightforward manner in bh he gave his testimony and answered all jueations seemed to convince those preseut of ibe truth of of his statement. + While not concurring in all that was s recently said in the House by Mr. Lamar, of Mississippi, #s to the philanthropy and statesmanship of Mr. Sumner, the Richmond Enjuwirer says it “must admire and must applaud the manly magbanimity, the elevated independence, and the truly chivalric ingeniousness, with which the gallant Lamar paid bis hearty tribute of sincere respect to the memory of a man with whom neither he nor the southern people ever had political sympathy or association. And aiter that speech the northern man who says the south is opposed to reconciliation must admit that he denies and defies the facts that confront him.” OS te, BAST BBICKLAYT! {the Ootampt i meet Davis’ pymeeiane Cis ih screst northwest: ou FRIDAY BYE: A Bock we JOHN WISE, Chairman. =e LBURN'S | UBIGINAL POLAB 80D4 AND MINEBAL WATERS, on Draught. 1699 PENNsYLvania AVERVS. erttr Moar w iter. Heretofore it bas been customary for them to cizculate reports about this time of the year to the effect that the fruit crop has been greatly injured, and that a very smail yield may be expected. This year, however, advices from Maryland au% Delaware agree in saying that no material damage has been done to the fruit crops in those sections, and therefore there is a prospect that the supply will be fully equal to that of last year and the prices no higher. s2e0e- We trust the Baltimore American is not in so bad a business way as to find it necessary to pander to the hunkerish pro-slavery element of Baltimore that is arrayed with the kindred clement in Washington in opposition to the Farty of progress and improvement here. a Appition!
