EVENING STAR. CROSBY S. NOYES....... Editor. Beading Matter on Every Page Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON OITY; TUESDAY. Dana as a Biackmailer. On Tuesday last we gave, on the suthority of Mr. Juckson Schultz, of the New York Cu: ber of Commerce, the particulars of a bleeding operation performed by the New York Sun gang upen a jewelry firm in Philadelphia. The frm 4m question was in debt to the Treasury Depart- | menton a compromise case of a technical ir- | regularity in some invoices, andon account of the money panic the firm was not in s condition to meet its obligations to the Government. Schultz was indignant and told him upon his retarn to New York he would see Mr. Dana, whom he knew intimately, and if injustice had been done the douse, he would endeavor to have them righted. Upon his retarn to New York, Mr. Schultz went to see Mr. Dana,| and related the circumstances as set forth. Dana made no satisfactory answer to the alle- gations against his representative, and Mr. Schultz indignantly charged that the man was @ striker in Dana’s employ, and that he verily believed that he divided with Dana, and that both understood each other perfectly well, in regard to the transaction with the jewelry firm io Philadelphia. After making this declara- Von, Schultz, who bad been Dana's friend for ugwerds of twenty years, left him, first telling him, however, that he had convincing proofs— Fespectable oaths, and writings in this ex-detec- tive’s hand—that the firm had been victimized | by « representative of a paper which, instead of undertaking to expcse corraption for an honest purpose, had only in view pecunlary gain. Damning as these allegations are against Dana and his black-matling sheet they seem to be fully established by the testimony yesterday before the Committee of Ways and Means. Mr. James FE. Caldwell, of the Philadelphia Jewelry firm in question, testified that William P. Wood, au ex-government chief aetective, came to him, saying that Mr. Dana, of the New York Sun, bad agreed to give him $1,000 for an article containing all the facts in the Caldwell case. Witness consulted bis partners, who said bere is another dangerous blow, and if this dan has possession of all the facts and can sptead them in such a way as to damage our €redit we had better close with his proposition, which was the payment of bis influence at Washington. paid, and Wood gave a paper signed by himself saying, from an examination of the case, he be- | lieved Caldwell & Co. did not intend to defraud the government.
