Largest Circulation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON CITY; THURSDAY.............April 23, 1874. Cremation, Apropos to the subject of cremation, which is just now being everywhere discussed, we offer following from Professor Oscar Loew, of the “Wheeler Expedition,” a distinguished che: ist, whose merits are vouched for by such emi- Bent scientists as Professors Chandler, Joy and Silliman. Keferring to cremation, Dr. Loew saye:—Oxygen, that during life is constantly Consuming Immense quantities of the blood, which is continually renewed by food taken into body, enters upon a diferent kind of destrac- | tion when death ensues. When life ceases the | albuminous parts of the body uwergo a slow Oxydation, during which process various inter- mediate products bet ween albumen, on the one band, and carbonic acid, monia and wats: om the other, are form Daring this slo Process intiuite nmambders of microscopic Organisms are developing themselves upon the decaying albuminous matter, and are the cause of the production of various Baseous ters of disgusting odor, comprising solphuretted hydrogen, organic ammoniacal bases and volatile fatty acids. Daring the war - ous stages of decomposition of the dead the wold and infusoria change their character, and different germs, which are the canse of malari- ous disease, find their proper field of develop. ment and multiplication upon such decaying matter. The microscopic germs that produces cholera, small-pox, typhoid fever, epizootic, rinderpest, etc., find a most desirable locality Tor propsgation in graveyards. The total decay of a buried boty is accom- plished in about two years, while by the process of cremation only about this number of hoars is required for the purpose; the final result in either case is precisely the same. In the latter case, however, danger from misasmatic matter is avoided. Cremation may be effected in various ways. ‘The dead body may be placed directly in a coal | } fire where the first stage of development will be tbe expulsion from the body about 70 per cent of water; and second, the oxydation of the organic matter. In order to prevent the escaps Of imperfectly burned gases the fumes evolved should be passed through a second chsrcoal fire, nothing but the white bones finally re- maining; these may be trans‘erred to the rela- tives of the deceased, or be treated with sul- | Pharic acid thereby gaining super-phosphate te aid in the development of vegetable produc- top. Apotber method of cremation is to placs the dead body in an iron retart surrounded by quick lime. By this process the gases evolved are exceedingly rich in ammonia, which may be condensed and rendered valuable in the arts,— the retidum in this instauce will be bone Diack,—useful in the manufactare of sugar. While the cost by the cremution method is tar less than by the present burial castom, numer- ous othet advantages resalt from the former which do not flow from the latter plan. This improved method of disposing of the dead should, therefore, commend itself to every in teiligent person that the weight of his in: may help to dissipate the singular prejadice so prevalent against this improved method of dis- Foring of the bodies of departe — “The Press om the Vet A veto message by President Grant is such an + exceptioval thing that the appearance of one woukl naturally draw attention, though on a much less important matter than is the subject Of that sent to Congress yesterday. The com- ment of the press and of the public, as received by telegraph thus far, is quite unanimoas in fupport of the veto; but this unanimity is ex- plained by the fact that the places heard from are commercial and business points, where the Public sentiment is altogether in favor of a und, well-bascd currency. The “ wild-cat,” “ red-dog” regions will, doubtless, send up a loud protest against the veto. The unanimity Of applause of the course of the President in the commercial cities is indicated, fer instance, by | the comments of the press of Baitimore of al politics, Thus the Sun says: “The President's veto of the finance bill— waking the maximum of United 5 tenders $400,000,000, and autho: Zz an additional national bank note circulation of $46,000,000, so as to make an aggregate of $500,000,000 of paper currency —wiil give satis- | faction to the business men of the country, end to | all who are interested in strengthening national credit. * * * The President will be sus- | tained im his veto by all who hold in esteem public probity and credit, and a redzemavie paper currency.” ‘The American says: | “President Grant yesterday surprised an’ de- lighted the friends of a sound financial policy, and confoanded and defeated those who noped to throw the country back into the renewed dangers of currency inflation and of bottomless Beaters by returning to the Senate without Ps proval t e currency bill. The veto mes- ry frank, direct ard strong, and shows tae, though the bill was held under considera- m for several days, there could at no tims have been a serious doubt in the President's mind asto bis duty to veto it. * * * The mereage bas an air of evident sincerity about it that will commend it te the respectful atten- tiyn even of those bitten with the inflation mania, whilst to the friends of a sound, redeem- able currency its harp array of facts and strongly-pornted argument will be specially Welcome. The only criticism it will meet from that quarter will be on its holding to the torty- four millions retired under the act of 1354, as a reserve to be used im cases of emergency, and perhaps @ littie regret that with the recom. mendation for the tucrease of the revenae there Was not coupled an equaily definite expression of the necessity for a decrease of the expend!- tures of the government.” | The Gazette, though habitually chary of good words tor the administration, says now: “The message, too, covering the veto and vindicating it, is @ most remarkable document, apd deserves unqualified praise for tae sound: ness of the principles itenunciates. [t is laud- able, moreover, fur another and a very differ- ent reason. It is a repudiation of the earlier doctrine held by General Grant, that the best way to secure the reversalof a bad law is to accept it aud execute it rigorously. It is also Qn assurance that,so far asit lies within his power, good faith will be kept with the public ‘reditor aud aretarn to specie payments pro- moted. ” —— Signs of unrest and upheayal are t iceadle im various quarters. Bald Mountain again threatens to vomit. Private Dalzell announces @ fell purpose to lecture; and Weston, the pe- destrian, is about to resume his walks. The | famous newspaper quadrilateral that under- took te organize a liberal victory in 1572, to wit, Mr. Horace White, of the Chicago Tribun, Mr, | Murat Halstead, of the Cincinnati Commercial, Mr. Henry Watterson, of the Louisville Courier- | Journal, and Mr. Whitelaw Reid, of the New | York Tribune, are on their way to Boston, con- | cealing their Macchiavellian purposes under | the thin mask of “pleasare;”’ as if anybody ever | sought pleasure in Boston in April.
