A proposition is before the New York Board of Education ‘‘so to modify the coarse of instruc- tion now pursaed in the public schools as to exclude ali branches of stuty not strictly em- braced in what is known as an clementary eda- cation, and to confine instruction in language exclusively to the knowledge of English.” One of the reasons urged for the adoption of this resolution is thst it might afford the instructors time and opportunity to teach the scholars how to read, write and spel] their own language correct! y, which the statisties show they cannot do now. It was stated, in this connection, that “the highest test of scholarship from the com- mon schools is the status of those who yearly apply for admission to the normal college and the college of the city of New York, and when it is affirmed that a great number of these ap- plicants are rejected on account of their dea- ciency im spelling and reading, the public will not be slow to conclude that it would be better to bave these elementary branches thoroagh'y taught in our public schools than to waste time and money upon very imperfect mstraction in French and German.” Gen. Of course the investigation, whether showing anything or not, could only have the logical result of defeating appropriations by de- laying action until late in the session; but we suspect that the memorialists above indicated had no real idea of the depressing effect upon business their ill-advised action would have. They thought they could ventilate their griefs, Jealousies and piques in a sort of general way, witbout aoing any special harm, bat they now find that they bave simply been used as tools and catspaws by malignante, who, in their hate for the District government, would delight to see a period of financial distress that would cripple the whole community. Nothing would suit these malignants better than to nave a sea- son of unparalleled business depression in Washington.
