The Railroad Extension. ‘The House yesterday passed, with an amend- ment, the bill supplementary to the act entit'el “An act to authorize the Washington City and Point Lookout railroad company to extend a railroad into and within the District of Colum- bia.” This Dill is a substitute for the bill rejected by the House previously, giving this companys the right of way through the District along the south front of this city, up to George- town. The present bill authorizes the company, instead of crossing the Eastern branch as before Proposed, to cross the fists above the head of the Eastern branch. They start from Brandy- wine, southwest of Washington, and proceed northerly until they get to Biadensdurg; then trom Bladensburg to Pinsy Branch, northwest of this city; then up Piney Branch to Kock creek, and down Rock creek valley to Water street, in Georgetown; thence along Wat +treet to a point near the northwest rn ter nus of Aqueduct bridge; Potomac to the of trict of river the Dis tion outside of imits of t to connect its road w of the Baitimore aad ( the location of said route to be aa to ths approval of the engineer in charge of pablic buildings and ground. An amendment adopted by the House requires the company to take up its tracks between the Insane Asylum and the Potomac river, and forbids the future location of any road between the a-ylum and the ri Should tiis amendment be adopted by the Senate it would destroy the present connection y the Baltimore and Ohio compa- y, largely as a freight line. This piece of road runs down the Potomac shore on the Maryland side to @ point opposite Alexandria, where the cars are taken across the river upon barges. The line might be reconstructed east of the [a- tam and avoiding the river shore, or it may be that the line north and northwest of the city, authorized by the bill and making connec- tions South, would do away with the necessity for the branch to Alexaudria, or opposite, ou the Maryland side. — The election of Governor Washburn, of Mas- eachusetts, Butler's antagonist, to the Senate is looked upon by seme as a sharpdefeat received by the General. It would seem, however, th: the prohibition question, and other local m: ters, entered into the issue, and it is probable that Butlerism or anti-Butleriem had very little te do with the result. As Senator Sumner’s term would bave expired in March next, Gov. Washburn wili have but a short time to serve in the Sevate unless he should be returned by the next legislature fur the long term >f six years. The election for members of the legis- lature takes place next fall, when the main issue will be between the Butler and anti- Butler republicans. Of course no valid ar- rangement as to Gov. Washburn’s successor can be mae at present, as the result will de- pend ly upon the political complexion of i ng legislature.
