MERTING IN FAVOR OF THE CORCORAN S(TE.-| A meeting ot the property hoiders of the portheastern section of the city and market | dealers was held last night at Burdette’s Hall, K street, near 7th, to consider the sabject of a market on the Corcoran square, fronting on 7th street, between © and P. Mr. W. H. Hoover alled the meeting to order, and, on his motion, loseph Daniels was called to the chair and Mr. Joseph Weyrich was selected as seeretary. Mr. Hoover stated that it was well-known | that the tpt Sargon had oeigon the square in question for market purposes, but no bailding had yet been erected. All could see the necessity of a market in that section. Messrs. Joseph Prather, Joseph and himself had called upon General Chipman, our delegate, and he bad, after he.ring their statment, prom. ised to aid them in getting the square into the bands of a private company, as the District government could not now afford to butid s market building there. They had called on Governor Shepherd also, and he had stated that the District government would sell out on favor- r | able terms, and desired that an oifer be mad Mr. Prather corroborated Mr. Hoover, and in | addition remarked that the Governor had used the words “very reasonable.” All were aware of the purchase under an act authorizing the issue of £200,000 in bonds, one-half of whicii had | been issued to Mr. Corcoran for the purchase of | the ground, and 4.000 to Mesers. Plowman and Hewitt, leaving 396,000 of the first issue of | bonds, and subsequently an additional £100,000 | bad been authorized, bat have not been issued. | The Governor declared that the District govern- | ment was unable and unwilling to proceed | further in the matter at this time, and he would | sell out to parties who would take up the matter where the District government left off. This morning William Wilson, one of the col- ered laborers employed at the brick yards at Waterloo, on the Alexandria and Washington railroad, left here on t o'clock tratp, and getting off at that point walked southward on @ track to his work. The train men, when sierting, gave the usual alarms, but before he could = off he was struck = the engine on the head. He was immediately placed on the north- ern-bound train and was brought here fortreat- ment, but was dead on arrival at the Sixth. street depot. The policeman were notified, and the coroner, Dr. Patterron. summoned. A jury of inquest was held at the depot, and after hearing the evidence they gave a verdict that the deceased came to his death by being struck by the engine, and that the conductor and engincer were not to blame.
