AN ACTIVE WAKE ON SMALL NUISANCES (SUOH AS HOLMEAD'S CEMETERY), WHILE a MUCH GRBATER NUISANCE (THE DOG INFLICTION) 18 TO BE LET ALONE. WHY? A meeting of the Board of Health was held last evening at the rooms on F street. Mr. Langston, from the committee on ordinances, Teported recommending that the complaint as to the interment of dead bodies in Holmead's grave yard (that having been declared a nat- sance by the board) be referred to the Governor, whom they bad no doubt would take euch action as would prevent buriais there in future; adopted. Mr. Langston, from the same committee, made & report on acommunication from the health officer, asking autherity to employ the surveyor of the District to make estimates of the quantity of material required to abate nuisances caused by stagnant water, and assess all charges on | the property giving the authority requested; adopted. “IMPRACTICABLE” TO TACKLE THE DOG QUESTION—BUT wuy? Also, from the same committee, to whom was reterred the resolution of Mr. Marbury, “that | dogs running at large without their owners ac- companying them are a nuisance, and it Is the duty of {he poundmaster to impound all gach animals found running through the streets,” re- ported that it was unwise and impracticable at this time either to amend the ordinances or to engraft @ new one in regard to the matter, and recommended that the subject lie upon the table. SUBPRISED, AND NO WONDER. Mr. Marbury expressed surprise at the report after the committee had been instructed to bring in an ordinance providing that dogs s be muzzled the year round, as suggested by Dr. Verdi. There was no denying that dogs are nuisances, and fully three-fourths are utterly | worthless, and something should be done about it. Dr. Cox was of the opinion at first that Dr. suggestion was the proper one, but he could not see that it could be carried into effect. A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER. Dr. Bliss agreed that dogs are nuisances but considered that the board had not the power to go further at this time. Mr. Marbury thought it strange that the Sixt! board Rad no power now. Doge are domestic animals, and if they run at large they have to muzzle them. Dr. Verdi said if they have no power to de- clare dogs nuisances the ordinances on the sab- ject had better be repealed; and he noticed that goats were not allowed torun at large, but they are less dangerous than dogs. Mr. Langston defen: the report, stating that under the preeent laws they have the power to enforce the muzzling of dogs for three months in the year, and in a few months that time will be here. Mr. Marbury moved to refer the subject to the sanitary commit HERE IS THE VOTE ON THE DOG QUESTION. The report was adopted. Yeas— Messrs. Lang- ston, Cox and Bliss. Nays—Messra. Verdi and ry. Verdi, from the sanitary committee, reported that premises No. 509 9th street were & nuisance, injurious to health, and the Health Officer was directed to abate the same accord- | ing to law. [This ls the building adjoining the old Chronicle (‘fice in which it was stated at @ previous ueceting rats have deposited offensive matter beneath the second floor.] Dr. Bitse remarked that the rats had the reputation ot being scavengers, and in this case they had done much cleaning. The Health Officer presented a synopsis of the operations of his office for the week ending | April 4, showing nutsances reported, 344; « referred, 122; do. abated, 376; dead animals re- Inspections, 29.541 bunches fish, Ju taylors, 163,000 herrings and 5,900 oysters. —— Tae Ceanity ENTertatnments—The Con- cert for St. John’s Hospital—Tue first euter- taipment in the cause of charity—the concert | at Willard’s Hall last Monday evening—was en. | tirely successful. Heald, was charmingly eung, and drew | forth great applause. | ‘The second part was opened by the perform. | ance of the Premiere Symphonie by Beeth by Dr. Caulfield and bis pupil, Mrs. Startevant | core. ‘This delighted those’ in the audience who love and appreciate classic music.
