Tax CowyecticuT ELection.—The legista- ture to be chosen in Connecticut to-day will elect a United States Senator in place of Hon. Wm. A. Buckingham, whose term expires in March, 1575. The legisiatare chosen last year had a democratic majority of four on joint bal- lot, the republicans having control of the senate by one majority. The candidates for governor are Henry B. Harrison, rep., Charles R. Inger- soll,dem., and Henry D. Smith, prohibition. The vote for governor last year footed up: Democratic, 45,059; republican 45; temper- ance, 2,541. The prohibitionists claim thatthey | will be able to increase their vote this year to 5,000, and should they do so they may prevent either of the political parties from getting a popular majority, and thus throw the guberna- torial election into the legislature. The demo- erate are seeking to make & little capital by charging the inflation policy of Congress upon the republicans, but with no great success, as it no idle | is pretty easy toshow that the two patties are | tarred about alike with the intiation stick. The main stake at issue is the United States Sena. torship, and the candidates are the present Sen- stor, Buckingham, on the part of the republi- cans, and Kepresentative William H. The Baltimore Sun says of the closing session: The chief business—that which is essential te running the state gov- ernment—appears tohave been nearly all dis- patched, including the several revenue bills, while but one of the general appropriation bills for the two years intervening before another regular session needs further attention in a single bouse. —— —— In New York city the proportion of dogs to Population is not nearly so great as here, and yet there are so many complaints of the nui- sance that the authorities have been forced to take action in regard to the matter. At the next meeting of the Board of Aldermen an ord!- nance will be submitted authorizing all persons to take unmuzzled dogs found in the streets of the city toa public pound, and to receive 50 centseach. Acanine, thas delivered, can be redeemed by the owner on payment of The aldermen propose to give Mr. Bergh charge of the matter, but it is considered likely that the president of the society for the prevention o cruelty to animals will not accept the proffered authority,as the ordinance is to contain asection that all unclaimed dogs are to be killed within two or three days. A number of citizens, whose friends have ied from the attacks of dogs, are urging the passage of this ordinance. ‘The memorialists seem to have arun of bad luck in endeavoring to show anything to the isadvantage of the integrity of Gov. Shepherd. Thus a witness was questioned to-day appa- rently with a view to show that the Governor bad sought to evade the production of papers Defore the committee. The answer was direct and conclusive, to the effect that “Gov.
