EVENING STAR. S. NOYES....... Editor, Largest Circulation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON OITY; MONDAY... Where to Advertise, ‘Tux STAR, which, from its rtart, has been the pa- per of the people, has, by the pains taken to make Mrasafe, reliabie, newsy and acceptable visitor to every family, gained a popularity amongst all classes of the e-mmunity second to that of no newspaper in the country with the same area of population. Keep- ing fail pact the extraordinary growth of the every household in the District, snd a wide range outside, TRE STAR has now at- tained s circulation very mech larger than that of all the other city dailies combined. This is claim, but one we are prepared to establish at any time by “‘beoks and papers.” And this circulation, as mated a! Rees community, the wealthy, the great indus- | trial forces, the skilled mechanics, the laboring men, the bankers, the merchants, the house- keepers, the government employes, the Congress- men—in short, thers is no circle where THe Stak is not a regular and welcome guest. The Fesalt is that Tux Stam affords unsurpaseed ad- vantages ase mediom of commenication betwesn ‘il classes of the community, 1n the way of the ad )twument of demand and supply. Tax CowyecticuT ELection.—The legista- ture to be chosen in Connecticut to-day will elect a United States Senator in place of Hon. Wm. A. Buckingham, whose term expires in March, 1575. The legisiatare chosen last year had a democratic majority of four on joint bal- lot, the republicans having control of the senate by one majority. The candidates for governor are Henry B. Harrison, rep., Charles R. Inger- soll, dem., and Henry D. Smith, prohibition. The vote for governor last year footed up: Democratic, 45,059; republican 45; temper- ance, 2,541. The prohibitionists claim thatthey | will be able to increase their vote this year to 5,000, and should they do so they may prevent either of the political parties from getting a popular majority, and thus throw the guberna- torial election into the legislature. The demo- erate are seeking to make & little capital by charging the inflation policy of Congress upon the republicans, but with no great success, as it no idle | is pretty easy toshow that the two patties are | tarred about alike with the intiation stick. The main stake at issue is the United States Sena. torship, and the candidates are the present Sen- stor, Buckingham, on the part of the republi- cans, and Kepresentative William H. Barnun on that of the democrats. ‘The regular session of the Maryland legisl “ture terminates to-day. Saturday county to subscribe to the stock of the Washington and Point Leokout railroad, was defeated in the The President of the Senate, Hon. barroll, made & violent speech against the bill, alleging thats similar bill had been strongly opposed and defeated last session; that deputations of taxpayers had appeared against it, and claiming that the bill, if submitted, would be carried by an irresponsible majority that would not sustain the burden of taxation it would impose. The Baltimore Sun says of the closing session: The chief business—that which is essential te running the state gov- ernment—appears tohave been nearly all dis- patched, including the several revenue bills, while but one of the general appropriation bills for the two years intervening before another regular session needs further attention in a single bouse. —— —— In New York city the proportion of dogs to Population is not nearly so great as here, and yet there are so many complaints of the nui- sance that the authorities have been forced to take action in regard to the matter. At the next meeting of the Board of Aldermen an ord!- nance will be submitted authorizing all persons to take unmuzzled dogs found in the streets of the city toa public pound, and to receive 50 centseach. Acanine, thas delivered, can be redeemed by the owner on payment of The aldermen propose to give Mr. Bergh charge of the matter, but it is considered likely that the president of the society for the prevention o cruelty to animals will not accept the proffered authority,as the ordinance is to contain asection that all unclaimed dogs are to be killed within two or three days. A number of citizens, whose friends have ied from the attacks of dogs, are urging the passage of this ordinance. ‘The memorialists seem to have arun of bad luck in endeavoring to show anything to the isadvantage of the integrity of Gov. Shepherd. Thus a witness was questioned to-day appa- rently with a view to show that the Governor bad sought to evade the production of papers Defore the committee. The answer was direct and conclusive, to the effect that “Gov. Shep- | herd was emphatic that all papers called for should be produced—to produce everything called for, =, so that there should be an end to it’, Avoraze Max Rouryap.—The memorislists to-day bad up another witness—Mr. R. B. Clarke—who has been “ruined” by the Board of Public Works. He has been ruined, it seems, to the extent of having his property in- | creased in value from 60 cents to $1.50 per foot by the improvements. No doubt the gutter | “specials” will [telegraph this away as “Very Damaging Testimony to-day against the Cor- rupt Board of ue of Fubve Works.” —— ae If one were to follow the bad example of the | New York Sun and Tritune in thinking evil of everybody on general principles, the inquiry might be raised why the Sum bas had nothing to say of the doingsof Blumenberg, the “pal” of its Washington correspondent; and why the Tribune opposes investigation of the doings of | the “Alaska Seal Ring.” -soe- ‘The thin vote in the Massachusetts legisla- ture to-day on the Senatorship indicates that they are getting sick of ballotin .
