This be true in some cages, but from what I have seen of street car conductors in other cities, those of Washington present an appearance of respectability that will bear favorable comparison with those of Baltimore, Philadelphia, Ne ‘ork. The wonder is that they are able to keep as well dressed as they do. When we consider that a majority of these employes have families to support, house Tent to pay, and their miserable allowance, we are at a loss to understand how they manage. Asaciass they are the hardest worked and poorest pa‘d of any body of working men in this community. Siz- teen hours on duty every day, Sundays not ex- cepted, lost time deducted, even thongh oce: sioned by sickness, and all for two dollars per day, with the humiliation of wearing one of Philips’ “bell punchers.” If these soulless corporations would pay their employes a fair and honest compensation for their services, there would be no necessity of degrading them by banging automaton thicf catchers around their necks. Mr. Hine objected on the groun: that owing to the gravity of the charge no in- dulgence should be allowed the prosecution and that the court should not prolong the acc: sation hanging over the heads of the accused.
