CROSBY S. NOYES.......Eaitor, WASHINGTON CITY TUESDAY.... ..Marech 31, 1874. How unreasonable and how ungrateful are the memorialists and those other opponents of progress in this District who, too weak and timid to make an open fight, content themselves with secret slurs and insinuations against the members of the District government. They would reap all the benefits of improvements, bat begradge every cent they have to pay, even where it comes back to them tenfold. Many of them who have been enriched by the action of the Board of Public Works are its bitterest revilers. There is a recent case in point. Not many days ago the owner of con- viderable ground near one of the much tatked | ‘real estate pool” improvements was abusing the Board of Public Works, thinking he had a sympathizing hearer im the person of a conser- vative friend present. Said this conservative friend, «What did you pay for your ground here?" «+ About five cent ” « Havn't you sold some of it?” 3 “Por bow much ” ¥ cents a foot.” What fo you sek fi re?" (pointing to it.) a dollar a foot for it.” d his conservative fren rvat hare been y these very improvements that y sthorities for making.” “Tha ¥ery well.” said the irréconcilabie, whining, “but my tax billsaresohigh.” Hang it, man,” said his friend, “ you have only to sell tner lot and poy your taxes, and rest, wort! ing to your seoty times what you gave for it.”” have struck the Iu siderable time gating Com- had been wasted, derable expen=e needlessly incarred mmoning and examining the interested ness Huber yesterday. After ® great flour- of trumpets on the part of the memocialists’ counsel, heral ling *n immense discovery of fraud in the use of District Government lamber by au employé of the parking commission, the | Withess was forced to admit that in a case upon hich be was examined, the amount was 40 or 0 feet of inch boards, worth 34 cents per foot; or from $1.27 other instances were of the same petty characte. Further, he admitted that the employé in ques tion was in:mediately discharged by the Boart on report being made to them of his proceed- ings. This is a specimen of the picaynne trum- pery gathered with so much effort by the me. morialists for the purpose of crushing out the party of progress. As in previous testimony for the memorialists, the witness had a grievance of his own against the Board. They didn’t adopt his tree box. con to $1.@ altogether, and that the | ‘TRE Lranrirries oy RatLRoaD ComPawres A verdict for 2.300 has just been rendered in New York against the Pennsylvania railroad company for the destruction of a bara by sparks from @ locomotive. The suit was brought by the Home insurance company, which insured the barn in question, the building being located feet of the track. The defendants claimed that they did not set the barn on fire; that their engines were of the most approved patterw; and, that if they did canse the fire, it was becanse the straw and other dry inflam- mable stuf? was scattered neghgently around the bara. and this should defeat recovery on the ground of contributing negligence on the part of the owner of the barn; and, fivally, be brought in the name of m must be in the name of the for his entire loss. As above jury took an op view, and inay moant claimed. Svats ror THE Pruss.—Referring particularly to the late lecture of Canon Kings- ley at the Congregational Church and the entertainment at Lincoln hall last evening, we take oc say that if those who under- take to reserve seats for the press at places of amvsement are not able to select thos> wh Will enable its reptesentatives to see and hear what is don we desire t task should remain umtone, so far as T'se STAR is concerned. As between occupying inaccessible and ineligible places on a “com: ntary” ti payt that newspaper people have for them, we @ecidedly prefer the latter. The “official reporters” would hardly recognize the proceedings of the com- | mittee as telegraphed to some newspapers. ‘Thus, the correspondent of the Baltimore Sun says of yesterday's proceedings: Peter O'Day testified that John F. Murray and Chas. Hulse, members of the District legislature, had con- tracts, and paid him for sodding done.” The oficial record shows that no such man as Peter O'Day was examined. Thomas O'Day was on the stand, but Thomas testified positively that he did not do any sodding for Mr. Charles L. Hule, of the Distric et t legislature. The Ch cnicle very properly comes to the defence of Jadge Wilson from the slanders of | the “independent correspondents.” It | “Several Journals, in publishing secounte of the investigation in the affairs e District, are in error in supposing that Judge Wilson Judge Wilson of counsel for the memorialists. is one of the membersof the committee, and in. | timations tnat he occupies any other position in this investigation are unjust and peculiarly annoying, ~ -200- — The expausioniste scored a victory in the Senate yesterday in striking out the second (or specie resumption) section of the finance bill, reported by Mr. Sherman, from the Finance Committee. They expect next to carry an amendment striking out the section providing for the gradual retirement of the greenbacks. ‘The indications are that they have nearly as great numerical strength im the Senate as in the House.
