MONDAY -Mareh 30, 1974. The Emancipation Soanment. ‘The Indianapolis Journal, in common with & large number of our exchanges, cordially en- dorses the suggestion of Tux Stax that there should be erected in Washington a monumental group of statuary, to include figures of Lincoln, Chase, Seward, Greeley and Samner, in com- memoration of the abolishmentof slavery. The Jowrnal does not, however, concur in our view that the work should be built by government. It prefers to have it done by voluntary sub- scriptions of the colored people. The Journal says « There wi legree of rare poetic justice in such a monument being Taiced by the voluntary contributions” of | freed men and women, who, having lived con- temporaneously with ‘their’ benefactors, have learned to know and revere them. The mon- ument would bea thing of beaaty in itself, put its significance would creased if it were erected by the contributions of the late slaves. Such a group as is spoken of, executed in the best style by a first-class ar- tist, would probably cost a hundred thousand We believe it the matter were tarned le they would raise that we believe, fur- 6 at the opportanity | of thus testifying their gratitude before the ury records, there never has been a monument crected by a liberated race to the men who pioneered their deliver- should like to see the ntry seize and execate dollars. over to the colored people emount in a single year, anc ther, that th world.
