Let him state without hesitation or higgling whether or not a/! of the pictures and statues about Washington are “caricatures”, and if not, let him kindly peint out which of them fall within that category, and which out- side of it, with the whys and wherefores in fall. Sloshing around as he does, like a bewildered ball in a cane-brake, doe-n’t do any good. it | worries the ball and damages the cane, in the one case; in the other it only frets the critic, without helping art or enlightening the public im any way. The Tribune owes it to itself not Jess than to its readegs to be specitic in its state- mente. Let it impale and condemn the false, and point out and approve the true, if any there be, and thus do something towards increasing the knowledge of those who undestake to bay Works of art, and at the same time aid in eda- cating the taste of those who bare to look at them after they are bought and placed in posi- tion. Among the many pictures and statues to be seen in the public buildings and grounds of Washington, the majority are creditable efforts of artists who were regarded, by common con- ent of persons of taste and culture, as masters im they day, and many of them have more than once received the warm commendations of competent and severe critics, foreign as well as domestic. The list of artists wbo have con tributed in some way to the adornment of its capital is a tolerably long and reasonably illus- trious one, considering the short aud busy life Of the nation. It doubtless does contain names of no great renown; but it is yet too much to say that statues by such sculptors as Kogers, Greenough, Powers, David of Angers, Craw- ford, Brown, and Stone, and p painters as Vanderlyn, Ary Stuart, Sully, Weir and Leuizs are nothing bat “caricatures,” however smart it may seem to the seli-constituted newspaper critic to say it. It is the opinion of competent judges, often ex- pressed, that there is nothing in the way of art to be seen in avy public place in New York, sd except only Ward's Shakespeare, in | the Central Park,—nor in any other city in the | country, for that matter,—that 1s at all com- parable with the works of some of the men we bave named, which may be seen in Washing- ton. But we did not intend to institute com pari- sons, which are no where more odious than when applied to works of art. Our purpose was | simply te invite the Tritmne to point out which of the pictures and statues in Washington are | * caricatures, and which not, with the reasons in | each case. We trust it will also see its way clear to give to the world the names of artists who stood or stand higher in their day and gen- eration than those we have mentioned. By all means, let the country have the benefit of a catalogue of this character, with such marginal , notes and reference® as will prevent the pur- chase of ‘caricatures’ in future. } = — | Gilbert ‘The cry of the obstructionists for the past two | years has been that, ‘on account of the #0- called improvements of the Board of Pablic ‘Works, property im every part of the city has been damaged and depreciated in value, and | special and genera! taxes have been made so high as to amount virtually to confiecatiua of estates.” If they believe this formula, and we believe they have sworn to it in some shape or | other, they ought to be gratified with the ap- pointment of Senator Stewart as chairman of the joint committee to investigate District fairs. Mr. Stewart is understood to be the owner of considerable real estate in Washing- | ton, and, in common with other property-hold- ers in the city, he must have felt the heavy hand of the oppressor. He ought, therefore, according to the reasoning and mode of pro. | cedure adopted by thg obstructionists, to be | both ready and willing to aid them in visiting | swift vengeance on the heads of those who have wrought their common rain. ‘Let us have peace.” — On our Grst page will be found an ‘important | ‘Dill defining the relations between the general | government and the District of Columbia, which General Chipman introduced in the House of Representatives this afternoon, and | which follows up the demonstration in his able speech on that subject and the balance sheet he strikes, an abstract of which speech we aiso publish. General Chipman clearly shows that the District demand tor aid in improving the | city isa matter of simple justice, based upon | Principles of equity and the pledges of the | fathers of the republic. The speech is worthy | the atteytion of his fellow members before act ing upon District matters. The coming Senator from Massachasett® is still the absorbing subject in the minds of poli- ticlans and jourralists. Those who are tnter- ested only in having Mr. Sumner’s vacant seat worthily filled, without regard to personal pref- erences, would be glad to see Charles Francis Adams selected; but the weight of opinion Bmong those accustomed to forecasting political events isto the effect that Mr. Dawes will be chosen, to be followed by the election of Gen.
