A. H. McKim testified that he had criti- cally examined the woman, and had found evi- dences of recent delivery of a child. She was now nursing an older child, two years old. Anna Hawkins, colored, testified that she had heard the cry of the cuild between 4 and 5 o'clock in the morning; it continued crying about half an hour, when it seepped, from the sourd she thought the child was in Mrs. Pope’s ‘'d, but heard noone conversing; had ther Been’ talking she could have heard them Wm. 4. Jessie Gordon, colored, testified that about 4 o'clock she heard the cry of a child, which lasted for about three-quarters of an hour; ge posed the mother of the child was with it; when she got up inthe morning and went out she found it laying dead at her gate. Emma Gordon, colored, testitied that the child bad been pu outon the street between 5 and 4 o’clock in the morning. She heard no noise in the next door house. testimony (much of which we have ex- cluded as unfit for publication) here closed, and the jury returned a 4 that the child came to its death by reason willful abandonment, and that from the testimony the jury believe that Elizazeth Glenn is the mother of the child. A warrant was issued this morning from the Police Court, and Detectives Sargent and McEelfresh, with Lieut. Anstin went to Mrs. Pope's house and Mrs. Gienn on the charge of willtully causing the death of her new- born offspring by exposure. She was commit- ted by the coroner to jail for action of the grand | jury. She is about thirty years of age, pock-marked | and pot at ail prepossessin, appearaace. Alfred Brockenbery was called for de- fence, and testified that he was frequently in the room of the prisoner; never saw the articles alleged to have been stolen; was present when the trunk was packed; saw the clothes patia it; was present at the wedding, and while there heard some one suggest that the trank should be looked after, and whefi he went out the trunk Tat fone. ‘The defendant lost some property. He also testified to the good character of the accused. The court held that there was mach un- certainty about the case, and that the time of the larceny was so remote from the time of re- covery, and as it could not be determined whether or not the Lomi who took the trank had placed these articles in it, he should dismiss the case.
