EVENING STAR. CROSBY 5S. NOYES.......Eaitor. ay te Reading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON CITY; TUESDAY... March 10, 1974. Where to Advertise. | as aioe afairs. He apparently iabors un- der the impression, from the amountof disinter- ested patriotism preached by the memorialists and their blowers and strikers, that the whole army of them stood ready to come forward and tell their little second-hand stories free of ex- | pense to any body, and particularly without | cost to the government. The honorable gentie- man is widely mistaken as to the character ot our professional obstructionists. The ee of ‘Tux STAR, wbich, from its start, has been the pa- p Shey hcencccar — eon ney thea Bet of the people, has, by the pains taken to make ‘aah maine Wasafe, reliable, newsy and acceptable visitor to ™&te occupation, and they look upon every family, gained s popularity amongst allclasses gation of any sort before Congress asa perfect ‘of the community secord to that of no newspaper in | Windfall. That is the main interest the most of the country with the same erea of population. Keep- | | them bi in getting them up. If they don’t pace with the extraordinary growth of the succeed in i. Congress to pay the fees of ~ city, and reaching every household in the District, | ard a wide range cataide, TEE Stax hasnow = | tained a circulation very much larger than that all the other eity dailies combined. ‘This iene idle claim, but one we are prepared f establish at any time by “beoks and papers.” And this circulation. | 98 stated above, is universal, reaching the busi- Bess community, the wealthy, the great indus- trial forees, the skilled mechanics, the laboring men, the bankers, the merchants, the house- heepers, the government employes, the Congress- men—in short, there is no circle where THE Brak is not © regular and welcome guest. Tealt is that Tux Stam affords unsurpassed ad- ‘Vantages ass mediam of Communication between a}! clasres of the community, in the way of the ad- | _ Grtment of demend and supply. -20-- A Dectrxine Sux.—We are surprised that the Baltimore Sun should charge us with being “disingenuous” and “evasive” because that paper knows from its own experience how un- | justly these epithets may be applied. Its city cotemporaries, the American and Ga:ette, are so unjust as to habitually speak of the <‘disingenuous,” “tricky,” “‘Jesuitical,”” &c. When the Sun, therefore, imputes to us want | of frankness, it would be easy for us to retort in kind “you're anothe: bat we ecline the bad example. But it Mast be conceded that the Sw: hoagh dis- tinguished for its candor and ingenuousness, is no longer the paper of the people. Since its Proprietor became rich it is always found allied With wealthy hunkerism, the secession aristoc- | racy, and all the big monopolies. It is naturally | Mr. Garrett’s devoted henchman, and quite as naturally it caters to the pro-siavery Bourbonism | of Maryland, pailiates all the riotous deeds of the secession element in Baltimore, and follows with | affectionate interest the movements and for- | | ‘tunes of “President Jefferson Davis.” To be at | once s millionaire, a secessionist and a Bour- ‘bon is s combination of endowments sure to ‘enlist the devout reverence of the Sun, and ‘when Mr. Corcoran, in his “eloquent letter’ wo, the secession Southern Historical society meet- | ing in Baltimore, expressed his warm sy: mpathy for the ofject of that society, (which object the Sun, too, endorsed as ‘‘in the cause of truth,” and which, according to one of the speakers, is “*to secure the coiperation of all who have not lost faith or hope in the cause,”) it could not be doubted that the Sun was thenceforth fally enlisted as the ally of Mr. C. in his crusade against the District government. It could not be doubted that the Sun, disregarding the interest ‘that Baltimore and its business men have in the Wonderful growth of Washington, whereby so ‘many customers are created for the Baltimore markets, would champion the secession fosst|- ism of Washington and instruct its editors and writers to “pitch in” against the District gov- €rnment. We are sorry to s°e a paper, once insinential, enterprising, and of advanced ideas, ‘content to follow the secession rat, and act as tender for railroad monopilies, and fossil obstructionists in the path of the progress of the allied cities of Washington : and Baltimore. Having demonstrated t their ability to build ap & great and powerful order in the interasts of agriculture, the Grangers now propose to dncrease ite value and usefulness through the agency of a new bureau in connection with the National Grange 1m this eity. Originally founded with the purpose of promoting social intercourse among the people of agricultural sections, this organizations has grown into one of practical value pecuniarily to its members, who have shared in the advantages it affords for buying and selling on the cooperative plan. No inconsiderable amount of reform in the matter of legislation has also been brought about in certain sections through the influence of the order, but these results thus far have been simply local in their character. To en- bance the practical usefulness of the order, it is now proposed to establish in this city a statis- tical bureau to collect and disseminate informa. tion relative to the crops. Subordivate granges will report direct to the state grange all in- formation of interest relating to the crops. ‘The ditlerent state granges will report to the statistical bureau of the order at Washington. ‘This bureau will compile from these reports 4 monthly bulletin; will simaltaneously trans- mit if by telegraph to the different state granges, and these in turn will distribute copies of this balletin to every subordinate grange within its jurisdiction This bulletin being based on reports from practical farmersin every eral in the country, it is believed will be more satisfactery than the bulletins of this character which are made up from esti- mates and from the reports of a few corres- pondents, whose facilities, in many cases, are not such as to enable them to give accarate statements relative to the condition of the crops. The new statistical bureau wili ues the telegraph freely, and correspondence between it and the different state granges will be carried on through this channel, in order that the latest information may be embodied in this monthly dalletin. In this connection it may be stated, from a semi official source, that the Urder is at present growing at the rate of over two thous- and subordinate granges per month and in membership at the rate of about 190,009 within — the same ? period. Anelection is being held in New Hampsbire | to-day for state officers, members of the legiel: ture, &e. The canvass has been very tame Both parties have confidence as to the result and it is possivie there «ill be no election of governor by the people. It is thought, in that event, the prohibition members in the legisla ture will vote for MceCutchens, the republican candidate, on the ground that he would veto | any repeal of the present liquor law. MeCuteh- ‘ens, by the by, ix quite a character. Not a! granger, he 1s called the farmer candidate, hav- ing been a tiller of the soil for more than 30 year A correspondent of the New York Timez, wno i recently interviewed him, found him on his | farm feeding cattle, in rough homespun cos- | tume, and with nd coat on. He is a brawny specimen of his class, six feet and two or three Snches im stature, broad-shouldered and star- | dy. His large, square, strongly-marked face is | bronzed by exposure to the rough climate, and | is surmounted by thick, obstinate gray hair. ‘With regard to his chances for election, he says | that, so far as his personal feelings ate con- cerned, he would rather be allowed to remain quietly at Lome attending to his work, bat he ‘thinks it important that the republican party | Should carry the state. The administration, he thinks, ought not to lore another state. Wh: ever its shortcomings may be, and whatever evils and corruptions may have sprung up, he sees no safety in allowing the control of aifairs | to drift int the bands J f the democrats. ‘There was quite @ lively discussion im the Senate this afternoon on the bill appropriating $10,000 to pay the expenses of the District in- ‘vestigation, as will be seen by reference to our Feport of Congressional proceedings. There was no objection from any quarter to appro- Priating all that may be necessary tur a thor- ough investigation, but there seemed to be a etermination to restrict the expenditare the Bctual needs of the committee. ‘Mr. Thurman. in the committee-room. noti- Sed witnesses that they would only b alowed pay for days when summoned to testify. Alto- gether, it isa bad outlook for the nobie army Of willing witnesses who are hankerin; a hance to hang around for a month or two at $250 per day, and tell what they don’t know about the charges against the District govern- ment. ‘The wicked story that G George Altred Town- send rammed the umbrella down the throat of ‘Walker, the correspondent of the Chicago Tomes, nd then opened it to its full capacity so that it cant be withdrawn, isn’t trac.
