She ‘Was standing close to a stove, engaged in toast- ing piece of bread, when her dress, coming in contact with the stove, ignited, and she was in ® moment enveloped in flames. Her screams attracted the attention of other inmates, who Wrapped her in blankets and extinguished the flames, but not until some portions of her bod had been burned to a crisp, and notwithstand- amg every effort for her relief, she has since died. Hon. James A. Garfield presid: and delivered a brief address. In concludin, , he introduced Dr. E.C. Wines, the American commissioner to the international prison con- grese at London in 1832, who spoke at length in favor of a reform in the mat‘er of prison dis- cipline. The speaker took the view that the labor of the prison must be industrial and pro- ductive. Bootless labor te as demoralizing and injurious to a prisoner as it would be to a free- man. At the conclusion of Dr. Wines’ address, the audience sang two verses of a hymn; after which, Senator Stevenson, of Ky., was intro- duced. He said he could point out numerous defects in prison life, and if asked which was the greatest, he would say that it was the bring- ing of boys twelve or fifteen years of in con- tact with old and experienced crimi: Then, iD, criminals shoula be classified. The crime of every man brought to prison shonld be in- vestigated, his antecedents leoked into, and a man who had, in the heat of passion, committed the crime of manslaughter should not be cone fined with a hardened criminal. In her visits to criminals she had found that ninety-nine out of one hun- dred were the victims of the curse of intemper- ance; and, in conclusion, she made an urgent appeal to every one present to lend their aid to the cause of temperance.
