Where to Advertise, ‘Tux Stax, which, from its start, has been the pa- | Per of the people, » Teliable, newsy and acceptable visitor to every family, gained @ popalarity amongst all classes of the er mmunity second to that of no newspaper in the country with the «ame area of population. Keep- | ing fall pace with the growth of the | ¢ city, and reaching every household in the District, snd s wide range outside, Tae Stam has now at- | ga tained s circulation very much larger than that of sll the other city dailies combined. This is no idle claim, but one we are prepared to establish st soy time by “beoks and papers.” And this circulation, as stated above, is universal, reaching the busi- Bees community, the wealthy, the great iad trial forces, the skilled mechanics, the laboring j men, the bankers, the merchan the house. eopers, the government employes, the Congress- men—ip short, there is no circle where Tux Stak is not s reguiar and welcome guest. The reealt is that Tre Stax affords unsurpassed ad- vantages as a medium of communication between all classes of the community, in the way of a usiment of demand aod sappiy. A Stadio Balld ms. .There is cause for congratulation in the fact that at last steps have been taken looking to the erection in this city of @ studio batiding for artists. Among the minor wants of Washing- ton none has been felt more than the need of such an establishment as this, where suitable accommodations could be provided under one roof for the artists residing here, as well as for others who would be glad to make this city their home if they could find quarters where they might work comfortably and under conditions neceseary to success in their profession, and where one or two class rooms could also be set apart for those wishing to give or take lessons in drawing or painting. Sucn a building would do so mach toward creating and developing re- fined taste, and at the same time go so far to- ward making Washington an art-center for the | whole country, that there ought to be no diffi- eulty im at once raising the money required for its construction. But, looking at the matter in a more material | Night, it deserves the attention and cooperation of those who, caring little for that phase of the subject. merely seek to secure a good interest on their money investments. Taxing into ac- count the number of artists now residing here, who lack proper accommodations, and who would doubtless avail themselves of the first opportunity that presents itself for bettering their condition, together with those who would locate here if suitable conveniences were as- sured, it is questionable whether any building could be erected that would be more certain of adesirable tenantry in every respact than one euch as is proposed. As stated abeve, measares have already been set on foot looking to thisend. We have been shown the drawings and plans of a building in- tended exclusively for artists’ studios which it is proposed to erect on 17th street, in the rear of the Corcoran Gallery, and which, it seems to u8, will meet all the requirements of the situa- tion, for the present, at least, and at a cost, too, t looks reasonable and entirely within the means of a comparatively small number of persons. The interior arrangement appears to be well adapted to the purposes in view; and, while the main portion of the building is sim- ple and inexpensive, the front promises to be a decided architectural acquisition to the city. The project is, we believe, to build it by means of stock subscriptions or some like mode of pro- cedure, and we understand our citizens will shortly be called upon to ald the enterprise in such ways and to such extent as they may feel able. We trust those having the matter in charge will be well received. Aside from the pecuniary returns on the investment, which could hardly fail to be satisfactory, there is no way in which the same amouut of money could be made to do more for the benetit of the city in that broad and lasting sense which cannot be taken in at a mere glance of the eye nor meas- ured by the ordinary standards of value. The Lexington, Virginia, Gazette is disposed to poke fun at the members of the Virginia sen- ste om account of their fears relative to the eafety of the capitol building. While in session several weeks ago a hat full of plastering came down upon their unprotected heads. They left incontinently. Competent architects pro- nounced the building safe. Commenting upon these facts, the Gazette says “The Roman senate sat unmoved when the Barbarians were at the door of the capitol, and were butchered while the ‘order of the day under discussion. The Kichmond senate tucked tails and took out because the mice frolicki between the laths overhead, scaled a handfal of daubing down. “Stans THAT Have Ser mw Tus Nise- TSENTH CENTURY.”—This is the subject of a lecture by Mr. Louis Fitzgerald Tasistro at Marini’s Hal) March 11, and all who know the gifted speaker will feel assured of a rich lite- rary treat.
