Beading Matter on Every Page Where to Advertise. ‘Tre Stak, which, from its start, has been the pa- Per of the people, has, by the pains taken to make it asafe, reliable, newsy and acceptable visitor to | ing fall pace with the extraordinary growth of the city, and reaching every household in the District, and 8 wide range outside, Taz StAR has now at- tained a circulation very much larger than that of all the other city dailies combined. This is no idle claim, but one we are prepared to establish at any time by “‘beoks and papers.” ‘Ss stated above, is universal, reaching the busi- ness commanity, the wealthy, the great indus- trial forces, the skilled mechanics, the laboring men, the bankers, the merchants, the house- Keepers, the government employes, the Oongress- men—in short, there is no circle where Tux Stan is not a reguiar and welcome guest. The Fevult is that Tux STAR affords unsurpassed ad- Yantages ase mediom of communication between ‘il classes of the community, 1m the way of the ad- ustmert of demand and supply. Centennial. ‘The Senate seems disposed to give the cold | shoulder to the Ceoteunial project, and there is no doubt that the Congresstonai action asked in its favor would necessarily lead toa pretty beavy money appropriation—prob: from three to seven millions of dollars, as it is eati- mated that the cost will be at least ten millions, and only about three millions have been se- cured. And yet, as pointed out by the New York Times, it cannot be denied that the action Of the government has already pledged the na- tion to an mternational exhibition to be held at Philadelphia in 157 This has been done by acts of Congress, and proclamations of the President issued in pursuance thereof, in such authoritative and distinct form that the invita- tions to take part in the affair have already been formally accepted by the German Em- pire, the Netherlands, Mexico, and Ecuador. In these facts find the nation committed to an international exhibition, even should all other governments decline to accept the invi- tations which have been extended by the Presi- dent. it should also be remembered that in | everything hitherto done by the President he hascnly complied with the acts of Congress, and has up to the present moment kept himself in fall accord with the sentiment of the nation. He cannot be accused in this matter of allow- ing his patriotism to outstrip bis discretion, er the wishes of the people. Public opinion de- manded the centennial until it had to face the question of providing the money necessary to secure its success. Then, for the first time, we beard of a “Philadelphia show,” and of the lolly of our attempting an international expo- sition. The Times presents the question in its true Aspect in summing up as follows: itherto we have not advocated an prlation by Con, ngresein aid of this enterprise. bave hoped that the necessary amount would be secured by voluntary contributions. But the actual centennial is two vears distant, and itis difficult to excite public interest in ai event so remote. It does not seem to be under- stood that the required buildings must be com- menced early in the present year. As a conse- quence, we have s popular indifference which has already crippled the enterprise, and which threatens to Sestroy. it altogether. This state Of facts presents a dilemma which must be met without delay. Shall Congress make an appro- priation | immediately, or shall another al be made to the & Will be in ses: yet, and there is time for @ determined effort to arouse the public to a sense of their duty in this matter. A few leading citizens in each of the chief cities of the country can in a few days organize a movement which might speedily produce even more than the required amount of money. But if this alternative fail, st will be necessary to consider the other. The message of the President, which we print this m¢rning, brings the whole subject fairly before the people- We believe that in the end the pub- c judgment will be that, in any event and at cost, the centennial must succeed. W @ gone too far to abandon the enterpris appro- with honor.” —— IRREVERENT CHICAGOANS.—A writer in th chicago Tribune gravely rebukes the trivolit and levity of the press, and the times, and note: With especial sorrow the irreverence displaye | to the memory of George Washington in the repetition of Mark Twain's ‘witless joke about | ‘the cherry tree and the hatchet.” The rebak» seeme timely for the latitude of Chicago a\ least, for in a notice of Nast’s lecture in an- | other column of the same paper, it is stated “the neatest thing he got off was an illustra. tibn of ‘the day we celebrate,’ (the 234,) which | was a rudely-drawn hatchet, the hit being fully | appreciated, and drawing down the house in the most appropriate manner.” | Lynch law is indefensible on general princi- | ples, but if the wretch who eet fire to a school- | house occupied by hundreds of school children, at Rochester, New York, recently, could be caught and identified beyond the shadow of a doubt, there are but few who would regret the interference of a vigilance committee to ensure | his reaching, the gallows ,despite the tricks of the law. Such diabolism is even worse than the wrecking of railroad trains and the murder of scores of passengers. live is gain, and in the former simply revenge, to gratify which against but a single person, perhaps, the perpetrator is willing to place hun. dreds of lives in jeopardy. The Philadelphia Bulletin takes exceptions to Kepresentative Garfield’s remarks relative to the respective merits of the city and the coun- try press. tor who sisshes out an article at midnight and calls it public optmion,” whereupon the Bulletin asks,‘‘but what would Mr. Garfield say if he saw the country editor upon the arrival of his exchanges next day, slashing out the same article—with s pair of scissors—and Printing it as his own effort to express public opinion? ‘There are country editors who do not sin in this fashion, but the number of those who do is un. pleasantly large in every state.” — The New York papers are exercised over the Prospect of ‘wide-spread sickness and violent *pring epiderhics” in consequence of the filthy condition of the streets, and no hope seems to | be felt that the city authorities will do any- thing to remedy {the evil. The World says they should at least inform the public “what they propose to do with the money which they cid not expend upon the streets during the last jour weeks.” New York apparently needs an active Board of Public Works to attend to such matters. Perhapsa public-spirited effort made in that direction by energetic New Yorkers could be carried out witheut the penalty of ‘Congressional investigation at every turn. te Journal perhaps did not notice our warning toexchanges that persistent- Jy steal our matter without credit.
