WASHINGTON CITY; ‘as stated above, is universal, reaching the busi- Rew community, the wealthy, the great indus- | trial forces, the skilled mechanics, the laboring | men, the bankers, the merchants, the house- Keepers, the government employes, the Congress- men—ip short, there is no circle where Tue Stak ts not s regular and welcome guest. The Teult ie thet Tue Stax affords onsurpassed ad- Tantages asa medium of communication between ali classes of the community, 1a the way of the ad- unment of Gomend and supply. The Point Lookout Railroad. To obviate the objections against the route Proposed for this road through Washington, it as now proposed, we hear, to ask Congress for the approval of a route into Georgetown vy ‘way of the valley of Rock creek. This is a deep ravine separating Georgetown from Wash- ington, and will admit of a railroad in its valley | which will be many feet below the highways of | either Washington or Georgetown. The route | pursued by the road would, according to this | Project, be from its intersection with the Balti- | xzore and Ohio railroad at Hyattsville (near Bladensburg) to Piney Branch, and down the | Valley of that stream to Kock creek, down Rock | creek to Water street, Georgetown, and up Water street to the Aqueduct bridge and above. | ‘This would seem, from the hasty glance we ‘have been able to give to the matter, to be a | route not liable to the many objections made against the shore route from the Navy Yard to Georgetown. At the same time the Point Loo! road, with its arrangement with the Balti- more and Obio road, could, we presume, have ita entrance to Washington on the tracks of the A The Annexation Question. nnexation of Georgetown to Washington is no longer an open question; Georgetown is an- nexed te Washington with its present bounda- ies, but the fact is not patent, because the ‘ame of Georgetown is retained; and to retain the shadow while all separate and independent Jocal self-government is goue, while the name of Georgetown 's a mere shell, all oatward show without inward substance, and simply repre- sents a defunct corporation, is a suicidal policy. ‘The name of Georgetown now is anincubus ‘upon her prosperity. Things are altered, and the correspondence in names should exhibit it. ‘The community of interests between Wasbing- ton and Georgetown being now established by positive law, this nominal distinction is clearly an i 'y to both cities; it imports some unde- fined and antagonizing difference in the statas ofeach, when nove really exists. The identity ‘Of the two is not perfected. and this is not an imaginary evil; it actaally distarbs and con- fuses the popular and legislative mind; the dual mame suggests a dual municipality, and tends to practical disadvantages. Explanations of this absurd distinction without a difference, become pecessary to strangers and members of Congress, It being a matter of undeniable pablic utility that the name of Georgetown should be merged im that of Washington, not West Washington, | in order to secure the incidental benefits of the fundamental change in her form of goverhment if it be true, which is doubtfal, that a few in- dividuals may suffer inconvenience, yet private interests must yield to the preponderating ac- commodation and welfare of the public. The | custom-house being self-supporting, will re- main, and Georgetown, with its changed name, Wil! possess all the postal facilities of the capi talof the nation, and of the commercial empo Fiums of the country, with their vast popula- tions. To demand more is scarcely a modest request. The question should not be complica- ted with a proposition to embrace a larger area ‘of territory than that contained within existing | Limits. The nomenclatare of the streets can be easily adjusted. The public good obviously and | urgently dictates the change, and far out- weighs all possible objections. | ——-+ee-—_____ For years past the oystermen on the Potomac have been engaged in fostering a hostile feeling between Maryland and Virginia in reference to the exact boundary line between the two states. Miniature naval engagements have occurred from time to time betwoen the contending powers on the Potomac, boats have been cap- tured, and any number of heads broken. Here- tie the vexed boundary question have been in vain. Commissioners have been appointed on the part of Virginia and Maryland to settle the controversy, but they have failed todo so, and ‘the war goes on as before. The Maryland legis- lature now propose that the two states fix upon @ single arbitrator to decide the questions at is- Sue, suggesting as its first choice Hon. Jere S. Black, of Pennsylvania. Unfortanately, how- ever, for the interests of good feeling, a resolu- tion has been entertained by the lower house of the Virginia legisiatare directing the Attor- | ney General of the state to bring suit before the United States Supreme Court, im order to od- tain a decision which shall have the effect of effectually settling the v>xed question. ———_— -w0e- Mr. Fulton, of the Baltimore American, in a letter from New Orleans, relates several grim Jokes perpetrated by Gen. Batler while he was in possession of New Orleans during the war. He sent out & stonecutter, guarded by a file of soldiers, one day, to the equestrian bronze | statue of Jackson.
