EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8S. NOYES. . Editor. Largest Circulation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON CITY; FRIDAY February 13, 1974. What Peopie = Think of the A subscriber to the WaExLy Star, residing in Dakota, writes as follows : “I am sorry to say that Taz Star has not Virited me for some weeks, and that the omi+ sion is creating a waste in the pathway of my life which nothing earthly can — Aman im Washington, after mee FO ‘aE STAR Py rtd for 14 years, would be likely to miss it, | + of its daily visits. But take that man out of Washington at the end of ten years, and isolate him at an indian agency, 500 miles from trices and let his weekly mail, which comes ‘gtace and the aid of an Indian scout, fail to Bg bim at least the Weexty Star, and can i his feelings? I think not, unless you have suffered in kind. “Now, I do not sup; I can recover the m umbers, but | want Tae Star with- out t ae lay; and if the failure to receive it lately is a neglect on the part of the man who received the ‘letter containing the money, I want him taken out and shot, without the b, Gt of clergy. We have only to add that the man has been killed, and that the paper will henceforth go regularly forward, as requested. “How sweet it is for brethren todwell togeth- er in unity,” saysthe Good Book. And yet we find, the brethren of the Episcopal convention of Wisconsin, im session at Milwaukee, by the ears, quareling like cats and dogs, and calling each others hard names. The convention met on the 11th instant, for the purpose of electing & bishop, and had scarcely come together before they commenced a bitter controversy over the admission and privileges of lay delegates. A Gispateh says that during the afternoon the most intense feeling prevailed, and the discus- sions were interrupted in the most undignified manner. The discussion was very bitter and the speakers were frequently interrupted by applause, hisses and cries of “Order,” calling bard names, and pronouncing opponents guilty of falsehood. Nothing was accomplished dur- ing the day and yesterday the convention reas- sembled and another exciting discussion took | place, this time on charges made against Dr, De Koven, the leader of the ritualistic branch of the convention, accusing him of extreme ritualism bordering om Romanish. Finally a vote of the clergy was taken for the election of bishop resulting, De Koven 32, and Hoffman 32. On the second ballot Hoffman had 3 votes. The clergy nominated Dr. De Koven on the fourth ballot, but the laymen refused to confirm this Domination by a vote of 31 nays to 6 yeas. It will be seen by the telegram elsewhere that the convention finally- adjourned to-day without making a choice. oe — The Louisville Courier-Journal has had “a strike” on hand for some days, because the proprietor refused te discharge the foreman of the office at the demand of the compositors. The editor, in stating the case, said We regret the course taken by the printers in this matter, because it will embarrass mauy families. The position assumed is wholly un- justand untenable. The mode of carryin, out was precipitate and rash. We were iron bo time to deliberate or help ourselves. An im- perilous demand was made upon us—a demand which no body of employes has a right to make, and which no self-respecting establishment would think for a moment of complying with— and on our declining to accede to it, we were lett without the ferce necessary to issus Cw paper. The day selected was pay- Thi our late in the evening, after all hands had been paid off We are not disposed to be as rash as our printers. Several among them have wives and children depending upon them, and in consider- ation of these we extend one day of grace. ‘Those who fail to take advantage Of this y re- suming their cases to-day need never expect employment again in this office. It is our fixed determination to manage our own business with- out the aid or supervision of a committee of voluntary managers, self-chosen from among our employes. Now that the issue has been raised, we had just as lief tight it out on the ex- isting line as not, making not the least doubt of the result. ‘The result of the strike was that the paper Was issued on a half sheet on Monday, but on the succeeding day came out in its usual form, and the editor states that arrangements have been made insuring the publication hereafter without embarrassment. The striking printers, it was added, had “proposed to resume their places in the office under the old foreman pro- vided all were taken back. The proprietors ‘Were willing and anxious that all should come back except eight men, whose names were fur- nished, and who under no circumstances, it was Stated, would again be permitted to work in the office.” As there wag no question of time or wages at issue, but only the real or fancied Occasion of dislike by some of the employés to the foreman, the strike does not seem to have any justifiable cause, and we are surprised that the Typographical Union of Louisville should bave endorsed it. 202+ “Aw Oncan oxen THE OBSTRUCTIONISTS.— It is current! that — obstructionists ven! 3 - est possibl encoess. “It is um thet it is to be a sort of successor to the defunct Patriot, which waschietly owned by Messrs. Tweed, — and Riggs. Itisto be hoped that it equal its dead predecessor in reputation, Surpass it in the number of its days. If its pame bas not been definitely settled we propose that it be christened the Twerd-Corcoran- Riggs Raven, as its chief occupation, it is sup; ly will be to ‘“‘croak” on account of the misfor- tunes of the first and the sorrows of his asso- ciates in their frustrated attempts to manipu- late municipal governmente.””— Chronicle. Messrs. Corcoran, Riggs & Co. are better qualitied for success in founding cemeteries and shaving notes than in running alive newspa- per, which requires capacity of an entirely dif- ferent order. They had much better employ | the money they will sink in this way in paying their honest taxes. However, if they have the money to throw away their new venture will absorb it with neatness and dispatch. But at- ter their experience with the Patriot and the | Citizen they ought to kno ——_ee- ~ Apparently a little sharp moral suasion will be necessary for the Sioux, the most powerful tribe of Indians on the plains. [t is a notice- able fact, however, that Spotted Tail, chief of the Brule, and Red Cloud, chief of the Ogal- | lalla Sioux, have not yet taken a hand in the late outrages on the whites, nor does it appear that they have sanctioned them. Both of these | chiefs, and notably Spotted Tail, have been friendly to the whites for years. They were ‘both tm Washington a year or two ago, and re- | affirmed their desire for peace. Ked Cloud, | however, did not go away very well pleased, and since has been sulky at times, although he | he bas kept the peace. The main difficulty lies | im the fact that the Indian chiefs are losing | control over their tribes, and are frequently the leaders of but a small part of their people. Should either of these chiefs take the war-path they will make it exceedingly lively for the boys in blue on the plains, since either of them, im case of war, can muster several thousand tolerabiy well armed ‘warriors. ‘The new order of the So Sovereigns ot Indastry is founded on principles similar to those of the Patrons of Husbandry and is not antagonistic te the latter organization. It is in fact a kind of cosperating organization. The first council of the new order in the West was orgavixed at St. Louis last night.
