EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8S. NOYES.......Editor, Largest Circulation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON CITY; MONDAY... -.....Febraary 9, 1874. The Swn gives a report of « mass meeting | beid im Baltimore Saturdsy night “in response to the call of the Maryland Association of the | Army and Navy of the Confederate States in | reference to the Southern Historical Society.” ‘The Sun says enthusiastically:. “Considering year, thie large meeting was very encouraging to those who had assembled in the name ef trath to aid the historical movement which w: set afoot last summer at the Virginia springs. By far the greater part of the assemblage was composed of ladies, who were very enthu- Siastic.” Judge J. R. Inglis presided and in stating the object of the meeting said the purpose of the Bociety was ‘the gathering, preserving, and compiling of all evidences and facts relating to the late war, in order that the true resultshould be presented; the truth, in simple justice to the martyrs of a novice cause, and in satisfaction to ‘thoge who still survive and preserve the same opixions that led to the conitict. [Applause.) In + this matter the state of Maryland and the city of Baltimore in particular could not fail to be interested. Nineteen thousand sons of Mary- | land had fought for the cause, and there could be no failure of feeling, no indifference, in a @ place whose sympathy had been so great." [Ap- plause.} Mr. S. Teackle Wallis, who was the next Speaker, said: “We owe it not to the dead, who, struggling in oppressions wrong, were lost; we owe it not to the living, who know so well their sac- Fifice and desolation, but we owe it to the world to show the evite that result from so-caljed free- dom; to show the world that no perfection can exist Ina government that uwrurps the power of Tight and sacrifices every principle of manioo truth and honor.” *‘The city of Baltimore,” Mr. Wallis said, ‘tis the most wealthy and pop- ular inthesouth. What our sympathies were in the late struggle it would be needless for me to tell what we have suffered each one who knows can feel as well asl; for from the first reverberation at Bull Run to the last shot at Sailors’ creek, each can claim some chapter. Our Maryland hosts were gathered together by no conserip- tion; they fought for love, not lucre; and where Springs @ blade of grass on southern fields there Jies some recollection of a fallen friend to each one present.” Mr. Wallis in concluding introduced Gen. Wade Hampton “in highly complimentary terms,” and General Hampton, “who was most enthusiastically received, after expressing his gratification at being commended by Mr. Wallis, proceeded in his address. He felt that he was not among strangers, and was honored by the @xhibition of that hospitality which had been extended by the people of Baitimore to himself and others heretofore.” ‘The object” he said “(was as important as it was sacred, and was Prompted by pride in the glorious past and obliga- tions to the future. It was to put out that which would justify the struggle and show the motives that animated the sout! “By the coopera- tion,” he said, “of all who have not lost faith or hope im the cause the end will be secured. Is this not worth struggling for? Are we willing that the hands that usurped our institutions should stigmatize us? Are we of the south ashamed of our history? No, thank God, we are not! (Immense applause. |" ‘The Sun, in conciuding its report, says that 8 letter “expressive of pathy from W. W. Corcoran of Washington” was read, which is not surprising in view of the heretofore in- terest expressed by Mr. Corcoran in the organi- | zation of this Society—a Society that, accord- ing to the speakers at Baltimore, is com posed Of these who “have not lost faith or hope in the cause,” and has for its objgct “justice to the martyrs of a noble cause, and satisfaction to those who still survive and preserve the same opinions that led to the contiict.” +22 A case recently decided in Ilineis where a marriage was set aside will attract attention in legal circles. It was that of a young lady of the Upper tendom of Chicago named Hancock, who married her father’s coachman. Immediately | after the marriage ceremony was performed she repented and returned to her home, con- fessed the marriage, and asked to be relieved from it. Finally she brought an action to set aside the marriage. It was proven that she was under the legal age, and it was contended that she could not, therefore, contract marriage without her father’s consent. It was also shown that ber husband, in obtaining the license, swore that the girl was 13, when she was not 16, thereby committing perjury. The plaintiff in- sisted, by reason of these facts, that the marriage should be set aside. The jower court held, hewever, that the mar- riage was legal and the case was appealed to | the Supreme Court. The latter tribunal bas reversed the decision below and decided that inder such circumstances the marriage is a nullity. This decision calls for considerable comment amongst the lawyers. It is univer- | sally held that minor, though wholly incapa- | bie of making acontract for Property, may, | evertheless,Jenter into a marriage contract | from which be will not be relieved by the courts. i Andif® male may do this, why not a female? gain, it is questioned by some good legal au- ! thorities whether unlawful acts in the procure- ment of a marriage lense vitiates the con-_ tract. It thus comes that though a license is demanded by law as a condition precedent to the marriage, yet if a person authorized to | solemnize the union proceeds without a license | the marriage is not held to be void, but the person perfofming the ceremony is made to | gaffer. Whether or not the decision of the | supreme court of [illinois is good law it serves | to illustrate the growing ease of slipping out of the marriage noose in modern da; 2e-—___ We are sorry to see that the New York Tyi- | dune reiterates in its editorial columns the mean | slander against the press of this city which was | telegraphed over by its correspondent bere on ‘Thuraday last.
