Beading Matter on Every Page review of the commerce of that port for the month of January last, which shows that the importa- tions from foreign ports have been light, whilst the exportsot cereals to Earope and miscella- neous cargoes to the West indies have been large. ‘The value of foreign imports for Jan- uary last was $2,709,486, against $1,659,752 for January, 1573, or a gain of $1,019,734 for Jan uary last. The southern coastwise trade pro- mises to be unusually brisk the coming spring, and severa! new vessels will be added to exist- ing lines. One batch of lies m reference to District af- fairs follows another so rapidly in the Washin, e=pondence of the so-called ‘‘indeps press that it fs hard to keep track of them. The New York Sun of Saturday pub- lished a dispatch from this city in reference to the proposed fire-alarm telegraph for this Dis- trict which is nothing but a tissue of falsehoods from beginning toend. Thus it is stated that » the District Legisiature appropriated $45,000 for the construction of a fire-alarm tele- graph, “a ring was instantly formed te con- struct this telegraph, and certain parties in New York, In combination with the local ring, applied for and obtained the contract without competition.” Now the fact is, as the writer might easily have learned if he had taken the trouble to in) aire, that the contract was never awarded. The Board of Public Works advertised in newspapers here and elsewhere for proposals for the construction of the new fire alarm telegraph. But one bid was re- ent” « eived—that of Gamewell & Co., of New York, (flering to do the work for $75,000, which amount, they have stated, was based on lower ates for the several items than had been p © them .« New York and other cities where the mproved system has been adopted. As the Distric islature had only appropriated 0 for the whole work, the Board of Public Works declined to award the contract. So much or the “‘ring” story. Passing over the next ehoed as one not worthy of notice, that the District secarities were only worth fortystive cents onthe dollar, we come to the statement that ‘the government annually pay one-half the expense of running the paid fire department m this city and Georgetown, and there is po earthly reason why it should be called upon to foot a bill for a fire tele- graph line, especially when any responsi- ble contractor will undertake to constract ene for the $15,000 asked for, withont reference to the $15,000 appropriated by the District.” ‘The truth Is the national government has never paid one cent. of “the expense of running the paid tire department in this city and George- either directly or indtreetly; but it has pported altogether by the local govern- ment, while at the same time it has saved hun- cireds of thousands of dollars worth of [property of the general government at the fires at the the Navy department, and elsewhare good reason why the general govern- ment should bear a portion of the expense. A clause in an appropriation bill last year provi- Ged that the United States should pay one-third of the expense of the District fire department — not to exeeed $25,000 ih any one year—bat there was no appropriation made. So that we have enjoyed so far nothing of this clause, based on right and justice, except the good intentions of Congress; but that don’t pay the bills. The atement that any responsible contractor will build the fire telegraph line fur £45,000, is absurd as the New York company are sole owners of the improved automatic apparatus. see Messrs. T. Goshorn, director general of the Centennial exhibition, to Gene- ral Hawley, president of the Centennial com- mission. relative to the alleged attempt of cer- tain Wacbington correspondects to blackmail him, just published, reminds one forcibly of the story of the three black crows. It was ori- ginally reported that Mr. Goshorn had said that no less than eight newspaper men approached himand stated that unless they were paid a certain sum of money they would use their best efforts to defeat appropriations by Con- gress for the Centennial. Mr. Goshorn states that but one “newspaper man” approached him, representing himself to be « correspond- ent, and applied to him for such compensation tor_himself and two others associated with him, whose names were not given. Mr. Goshorn has since learued that he is not the correspondent of any leading journal, but gathers news for a large number of weekly papers in different sec- tions of the country, which have no regular correspondents in Washington. Mr. Goshorn further states that the said news gatherers for Any number of papers seemed to regard it mere advertising business, and as such the offer was considered anc and re Fe-pectfully declined. A bill is before the Maryland senate exempt- ing the property of the wife, whether acquired before or after marriage, from the debtsof the husband. No acuisition of property passing to the wife trom the husband shall be valid, how. ever, if the same has been granted to her in prejudice of the rights of his creditors. The numerous authors of ‘‘Beautifal Snow” should be happy to-day while they may, tur to- rrow it will be slush.
