/ EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. CROSBY SB. NOYES.......Editor, Largest Circulation in the District WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY., ... January 24, 1874. The Growth of Washington. For some years the readers of Tar Star have bad the benefit of carefully prepared statements of the annual real estate operations of the city, from the competent hands of Messrs. Kilbourn & Latta, the widely known real estate agents. The statement for | pears in another part of the paper, a} showing will afford gratification to all inter- ested in the welfare of Washingten. It will be feen that the money invested in the purchase of real estate in this city in 1873 is very nearly equal to the whole amount invested in the two years of 1870-71; also, that the operations of 1873 exceed those of 1 poth in the number of transactions and amount of consideration | upwards of 20 percent! This renarkable in- crease has been for a portion of the year, too, in the teeth of the disastrous financial storm. The further encournging fact is shown that in this time of panic not a single firm failed in Washington outside of banking operations. One of the reasons for this stability of Washin, ton business is found ‘nm the fact here state: that the Government disburses in Washington something over $15,000,000 vearly, or $1,500,006 per menth. We commend this interesting ex- hibit to the careful attention of our readers. sse-- Introduction of Salmon into the e Po A few days ago we had the pleasure of an- tomac, nouncing to our readers, the initiation of an important enterprise on the part of the United States Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries; namely, the stocking of the Potomac river with the Sacramento salmon. The first experiments in this direction were made in the vicinity of Chambersburg, Penn., where are situated the head waters of the Conecocheague Creek, a fine stream which empties into the Potomac at Williamsport The localities selected were such as would be suitable for young trout, where the water is cool and clear and shallow, with a gravelly bottom, and free from any specially destructive fishes, especially from the voracious black bass, which ‘would very soon make an end of any namber of fry if they were to be placed directly in the Potomac. Several lots of young salmon have been planted in the region indicated, and we now give the official report to the Commissioner, Prof. Baird, of a still more recent experiment of asimilar nature,in some tributaries of the Shenandoah, and other waters adjacent to it. ‘The total number of young salmon which it is Proposed to plant in the Potomac 1s 109,000; and it is hoped that very positive resuite from these experiments will be appreciable betore long. In selecting the proper kind of salmon for introduction into the more southern waters of the United States, namely: the Delaware, Sus- quehanna, Potomac, and James, the species from as being better able toendure the compara- ely high degree of temperature of those n be sustained by the salmon of New England and the Provinces, and whic at the time of the first white settlements, not occur west of the Connecticut river. that iz any of the streams ust mentioned the Saci lid he region mento fish will be exposed to a temperature €qual to that of its native waters, where for three or four months together the temperature of the air ranges continuously from Fabrenbeit in the shade. The young salmon now being plarted in the tributaries of the Potomac are about two inches im length, and were hatched out at the estab- lishment or Dr. J. H. Slack, Bloomsbury, N. J., froms eggs gathered from salmon in the Sac- ramento river by Mr. Livinagton Stene in Aa- gust and September last. They are twice as Jarge as young salmon from Maine of the same age, and will attain a much greater size du- ring the first few years of their existence. These fish will probably remain in the waters where they have been planted for one or per- haps even two years, by which time they will probably have attained a weight of half a pound. They will then go down to the sea, and return again in about two years mor¢, making an interval of about four years from their birth, and weighing ten to fifteen pounds. They may therefore be expected during the winter of Isv7~78; and if their course is not odstructed they will proceed as directly as possit-le to the place where they were first planted. As, how- ever, there are numerous dams in the way, they will be arrested at the first impassable barrier, which at presen. is the Great Falls of the Potomac, where they can probably be cap- tured by the various devices used for the pur- pose of taking salmon. By the time of their return it is hoped that provision will be made for their ascent above the Falls, ard to the upper portions of the river, so as ty give as great an extent as possible to their range. to 110 —_-<es-- ‘The editor of the Cincinnati Commercial— who, on account of the handy way in which he swingsa club, and from the fact that he is never happy unless he is assailing something or somebody, may be considered as standing at the head of Donnybrook journalism in this coun- try,—moves for the abolishment of the chara ter “Se” from letters, and the substitution therefor as its equivalent in meaning what he calls ‘the two good words ‘and cetera.” There may be, in a purist sense, sound linguistic rea- sonsfor the prevosed change; but it will not find OT, as it ought not. The character **&¢." ‘bas almost immemorial usage t> recom- mend it, vith the added advantage of being shorter than the substitute sugges‘ed. Any re- form which abbreviates or condenses the |: guage or simplifies the spelling of words is sure to come into general use in this country sooner or later; but an effort to introduce two words where one, or even 4 character, will do as well, is taking a step backward. The American peo- ple are not taking steps backward now-a-days, even in small matters. | Sn ‘The Washingtor correspondent of more American makes a mistake in saying that the names of George W. Kiggsand W. W. Corco- Tan were appended to the malcontent memorial sent to the Senate against the Board of Public Works. These gentlemen may not, perhaps, agree with the Board of Public Works in all things, bat they are citizens of too much public spirit to joir hands with the small-sogied | viduals «ho Lave resisted every effurt to redeem the city trom its dirt and squalor. Some of the signers to this memorial, who but for the Board of Public Works would have spent their lives On ungraded dirt streets in which a carriage could not reach their doors nine months of the | year for the mud,are now particularly unhap- | py because the improvements mage have dou- bied and, even in many instances, quadrupled the value of their property! ———— +02 ____ A couple of telegraphic items -omewhat outre im character come from the West. One details the beheading of an old gentleman in ‘Cincinnati by am elevator, “which,’’ says the telegram, ‘‘sheaved hie head off, leaving his trunk on the floor.’ The other relates to the decapitation of aman by hanging, a somewhat exceptional paradox. A man was hung in Cal- ifornia yesterday, and according to the tele- graphic account, ‘‘when the drop feli his head as entirely severed from his body, which fell lifeless to the ground.” Lovers of the horrible Will doubtless appreciate these tragic incidents, —-—__-+e2- —— Cnief Justice Cockburn, of Englard, against whom Caleb Cushing hurled a volume severely eriticizing bis course at the Geneva arbit-ation bas given still another evidence of unjuatcir! irrascibility in inflicting an unusually heavy sentence of fine or imprisonment for contempt ‘upon a lawyer who would insist on writing to the press reiatrve to the Tichborne trial. ——_—_.se-_____ An Indian once tried the softness of feathers ‘by laying one on a rock and himself upon it.
