EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8S. NOYES. Largest Cirealation in the Distriet ~~ WASHIN GTON gl WEDNESDAY.. “whe New York Mail, on“ Art at the Oapitol,” says“the government is presented with either of two horns of an old-fashioned dilemma in its policy concerning the national capital. If no- thing is done to beautify Washington there is a general gramble that the capital of a great country ought to be, in its publie buildings and appointments, such a city as a great country may be proud of; if any move is made in this direetion, there is sharper criticiem that the covntry cannot afford to waste money in that fashion.” Io this connection the Mail eays “Certainly most of us would take a just pride in seeing our national capital one of the most beautiful of eities, with no faise porap of royal mazniticence, bu! with handsome public edi- fice=, One parks, beautiful residences, aud, not least, clean streets. Meanwhile, public enter- price’ and liberality is happily coming to the rescue.as it should always in a country in whicb—to put it Hibernically—each man is to be his own father, and the unpaternal govern- ment is expected to mind its own business. The vexed «uestion af to whether such a. govern- ment as ours should rigidly provide galleries of art and the higher education for the people ix best settled, practically, by private. citizens coming forward with democratic liberality to take the question out of the hands of the go’ ning of the g ington’s most pul ran, has made ay free gift ta thus to the country, is a nota- laudable instanee of just’ this, and red-letter day in the history of the national capital.” “Wat Ma: ¥ MED THRY ARE 0) B. They were Henry D. Cooke, late Governor, and Alexander &. Shepherd, the nt Governor of the District of Columbia. ‘hey knew at that time that Williams, who was a lawyer, had beer disbarred. Did they not know more and worse about bim?’— New York Sun. Mr. Dana writes the above editorially in his paper, knowing perfectly well that the Wil- liams implicated is not A. B. Williams, but an entirely different man—E. A. Williams, as cor- reetly state in every other New York paper Does uot Mr. Dana think that an editor who in pours fa private grudge, will resort to practices like this, is a good deal of a scoundrel” If he does not, every honest man does. —————— New York has 4 most belligerent pastor in the person of one Rev. Mr. Stewart, of the West Twenty-fifth street Presbyterien. Some time since he preached 4 sermon which was regarded by many of bis congregation as improperly pers and considerable excitement was created in consequence. On Sunday last the Kev. Stewart, in the course of his sermon fired Away at bis enemies in the following vigorous Style. “By vour action on last Monday night, you lave disgraced both yourselves and the church. Let my enemies interrupt me to-day if they dare. Do they know this pulpit is my throne’ Ut is my choice to he relieved from my charge; at, nti! relieved, I shall continue to preach, be protec If noother motlve had induced me to come into this pulpit to-day I would have been impelled to enter it for the vindication of free speech. Send them on: but if anyone any- thing untrve to Gamage me, I will prosecute bim ina ex til court. s + -20e- Let the girls beware of very young men. According to the verdict in an important breach of promise case tried before Judge Neilson, of the city court of Brooklyn, on Mon- day, young mep may make all the promises to marry they please; they cannot be held re- sponsible if undet twenty-one years of age. ‘The facts were elicited that on the ith of July last Henry Graf met Mary Treiber on a moon- light excursion, raw her home, made love to her and promised to marry her, but failed to do so. His counsel set up the plea of infancy, the defendant having been born January Ist, 1353, and on that plea a hard-hearted jury decided that the disappointed Miss Treiber was not entitled to the $20,000 damages she claimed tor blighted affections, Xo. Those best intormed do not anticipate any appreciable increase of prices, or scarcity of coal in consequence of the strike amongst the miners. It would be impolitic on the part of the coal companies to raise prices now because the demand does not warrant it, and the large supply on hand forbids it. On accoant of the mildness of the season there will pretty certain- ly be coal enough on hand to last through the strike, unless it proves an unusually protracted one. Several of the companies pay regular prices and are therefore not atfected by the strike, asthe men have left work only for the companies that graduate the wages according to the price of coal, and who consequently re- duce the pay when coal is low for the season, as is the case this winter. ‘The work of the Bureau of Education is get- ting to be more and more appreciated by the friends of ¢ducation, and the demand for the report of the Commissioner increases yearly. At a recent meeting of the state teachers’ asso- ciation of Missouri, at Warrensburg, a resola- tion was adopte:l recognizing the great value of the work of the Commissioner, and asking their representatives in Corgress to render the Bu- reau of Education every possible facility for collecting and distributing the important facts and statistics embraced in the circulars and annual report of the < Lommissioner. If not himself a , “ Reliable’ rumor bas “haa it that the Presi- | dent had signitied his intention to veto the ealary repeal bill, or that he would withhold his | signature, and allow it to become a law by re- taining it until after the constitational limita- hon had expired. Again, it has been reported that it was bis purpose to sign the bill, but not vntil the parts of the month woul ‘d have to be computed in the new deal. But, alas, for the trath of reli- able rumor, the President to-day signed the bill without i's, and’ Sor buts. An Obioan in town says that Mr. Waite, the | new Chiet Justice, is an extremely modest, un- assuming maa, of fine abilities, never been fully displayed, for the reason that he has never been in public life, and that evers- body likes him except some of the lawyers, who are “down on him” for his exceedingly moder ate charges, which, they assert, are unprofes- sionally low. see. In bis speech im the Senate yesterday in favor of expansion, Gen. Gordon, of Ga., made the singular statement that during the when in the south « gold dollar was worth sixty dol lars im confederate money, there was less real Suffering among the people than now, wh the greenback nearer approximates the value Of gold. ' —_..0 ‘The Spriagfeld Repu dhican—the Da Daily Sam- dewles a8 some of the irreverent Western sheets term it—thinks Mr. Waite will do. “although appointed from Ohio, the new Chief Justice comes of ancient Yankee stock, and enjoyed in youth the in¢stimable advantage of a Yankee bringing up.” Jessso.
