EVENING SEAR: Largest Cirenlation i in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY THUBSDAY.........Jamuary 0 as7t. Death of an Author. The announcement is made elsewhere of the death of Mr. Charles Astor Bristed, who has been suffering for some days from a severe attack of inflammatory rheumatism. Mr. Bristed was born in the city ot New York in 1820, and was consequently about fifty-three years old. He was the son of the Rev. John Bristed, a clergyman of Dorsetehire, England, and grandson of John Jacob Astor, the mil- lionaire. After completing his studies at Yale College, Mr. Bristed entered the University of Cambridge, England, where he remained five years, and took the degree of B. A. at Trinity College, 1245. Hix fine scholarship was illas- trated, later, in several literary productions, amongst which may be mentioned his Selec- tions from Catullus; Letter to the Hon. Horace Mann; being a reply to Certain Attacks on Stephen Girard and Jobm Jacob Astor, in a work entitled Thoughts for a Young Man; The Upper Ten Thousand; asd Five Years in an English University. The latter may be regarded as Mr. Bristed’s most important work, and a: tracted much attention from its ripe, gracefu! style. Mr. Bristed has also written a good deal of excellent English for the press and the mag- azines; and also an unpublished volume of Acreonatics, which have been mach praised by those who have seen the manuscript. Mr. Bris- ted has made Washington his home tor some years, having been drawn here with other men weaith and culture by the temperate climate, and genial literary and scientific atmosphere of the untional capital. His loss will be deplored by a wide circle of cultivated people here and cisewhere. «eee. The real text of the Cushing letter to Jett Davis, published elsewhere, shows that the yer- sion of it put out yesterday morning was so grossly inaccurate as to amount really to for- gery. Though not pleasant reading for the admirers of Mr. Cushing, :t yet has no smack of the treasonable taint that wonld have been indicated by the recommendation by him of a person to Davis as weil-qualitied to be of “spe. cial service” to him “in the ordnance depart- ment” of the confederacy. It has been stated that the Cushing letter was of the same charac- ter as the Jesse Bright letier to Jeff. Davis that caused his expulsion from the Senate. It will | be seen, however, by the copy of the latter mis. | sive below that Bright went to the length of recommending a destructive firearm to be used by the rebels against the Union: Waeminetom, March 1, 1561.—My dear sir Allow me to introduce te your aciuaintance my triend, Thomas B. Lincoin, of Texas. He / } visits yotr capital mainly to dispose of what he regards @ great improvement in firearms. O*Conor stands well to- the country as a lawyer and an man, but were his name to go to the Senate what a ransacking of old records, ‘ar- chives,” and musty documents there would be to prove him unsowpd on the political goose. And wouldn't the outsiders “go” for Judge Black, if by any chance his name was pro- posed? It is not casy to svggest the name of apy pr ent lawyer who would be likely to get through without gpme vicious digs from the awaiting tomahawk. +see- The President * course in fhe Texas matter wins very general approval, both from the party press and the independent press. Mr. Steiner, republican senator from Frederick, agreed with Mr. Earle as to the purposes of the resolutions, but thonght they might be accomplished by a statement that the colored people of the state are in favor of separate schools. The resolutions were laid over for future action. — As a good many pablic men were a little shaky at the outbreak of the rebellion before their patriotism had time te. crystalize it will be worth while toexamine Mr. Pickett’s budget of rebel archives before sending in another nomination for the Chiet Justiceship, to see if the nominee happened to be on terms of epis- tolary acquaintance with Jeff. Davis. Tho buss-bedies who have becn exercising their prophetic souls in predicting an Andy Jobnson row between the President and the Senate are not happy to-day.
