Largest Circulation i in the District” Reading Matter on Every Page, | WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY.........Jannary 7, 1874 The news comes from Texas that there is much | excitement in that state, owing to a decision of the suprenie court to the cttect that the recent election, which was carried by the democrats, was unconstitutional, and consequently nuil and void. It is said that the law passed by the last legisiature of the state providing for the late election was declared unconstitutional because it specified that the said election should be held On & certain day, whereas the constitution of the state provides that ‘‘all elections for state, dis- trict, and county offices shall be held at the county seats of the several counties, until other- wise provided by law; and the polls shall be Opened for four days, from §& o'clock a. m. until 4 o'clock p. m. of each day.” The point made by the supreme court of the state may be well taken, but it is a sin- gular fact that the unconstitationality of the law of the legisiature should not ha been discovered until suveral weeks al the election. Governor Davis seemed to have | no hetitation in approving the bill, and it is Bot at all probable that the question of the le- gality of this election would have been raised at all had he been reclected. The fact is that Gov. Davis would insist on foisting himself upon the republican party as a candidate for gov- ernor, against the protests of some of the men of his own party, who urged that only a conservative republican could besuccessful. A democratic majority of 40,000 proved the cor- | rectnessof their predictions. It isintimated th: the democrats who carried the state, and who have been making preparations to “run it,” will not submit quietly to the decision of the | supreme court, and will resort to force to get | possession of the state offices. This would put them inthe wrong. They had better tight it out legal! | Rights Bill and the Schools The following from the Richmond State Jour- | nal, the leading republican paper in Virg nia, Presents points worthy of serious consideration “The colored people of Virginia have to-day & magnificent opportunity to show their good sense and their real interest in the permanent welfare of thiscommonwealth. An ill-judged Measure is now before Congress which may compel the education togcther of white and colored children. We do not care to discuss any abstract principle involved in this measure. The practical results which are gbsolutely cortain to follow its adoption alone concern us. We know as well as any future consequence of present. action can be known that the attempt to com- bine the two races in the schools will result in breaking up the schools altogether. We recog. nize this fact ag caused by prejudice: Lan- tipathies which we have no power to uproot. It is enough that we see a great and benificent sys- tem imperiled by an attempt to reduce an ab- straction to immediate practice. Let us appeal fo the practical common sense of every intelli- — colored man to say if he really believes at bis people will get better educational priy- ileges by attending the same schools with the Whites’ ' Will that state of feeling be engen- dered which leads men to give generously to the common cause of education’ “Will the contact of the children thus enforced be such as to en- courage the hope of higher attainments and more fraternity of sentiment as they grow up’ Let it be considered that the colored race, though large in numbers. censtitute a miuorit Of the whole people.
