The Dayton Journ faith, or rather want of faith, of a conspicuous Portion of the press of the country as “th> lor-Scandal Press. don't - believe-in - the-chastit y-of-woman - the- honests-o-men-and-the-goodness-of-God doc- trine taught by the independent achool-for- Scandal press."" This is a true bill. Thereader it he sees there Of these papers who believes w! habitually must come to the inevitable conclu- siom that there is no God, no future, no virtue in man or woman. The effect is to make cyn- ics, infidels, and misanthropes of all, and espe- cially impressionable young people, who get their ideas from these sheets. All generous aspirations, hopes, and faiths are held up to utter scorn and derision by the Backbites and Sneerwelis who guide the “independent” infi- del press, There are no bounds to their Mephis- tophelean mirth when some unsophisticated youth, fresh from the family circle, ventures the opinion that there are true men and goed women in the world. How they y man in public life who professes mo- Fality or religious belief is not an arrant hypo- crite. What exuberant delight they find in re- Peating many times a day the sneering appella- tion of “Christian statesman.” What an un- failing subject of derision with these papers is the effort of “the Young Christians” of the country to bring young men from the streets and the grog-shop, to the intluences of the library, the lecture room and the church. When the New York Swn in its trade of defama- | tion pronounces the women in Government em- Ploy, one and all, a set of shameless prostitutes, how greedily the mutual admiration society of independent papers in Cincinnati, Louisville, Chicago, and elsewhere, copy the vile | Slander with piquant head lines and eii- torial notes of exclamation and admiration And when an indignant response is made repel- ling the miserable falsehood and pointing out | that a large proportion of these female clerks arethe widows and daughters of our patriot dead, struggling to make an honest livelihood for themselves and the feeble and helpless ones dependent upon them, does the Sun and its sym- pathetic sneezers of the “independent” press Oh no, they never retract. ‘This would take away from their independence, ! retract the sland. their intallibility as the expounders of the doc- trine of total blackness. How the echoes wake up the line of the independent school-for- scandal press when a clergyman falls from grace. How instantaneously the delightful tid- bit is reproduced, and with what a chorus of sneers at the “cloth.” A black sheep here and there is pataded as a type of the whole clergy. Theycan make no discrimination in favor of the grand army of true, self-denying preachers who have labored to make their fellow men better and happier in this world and to give them faith and hope for the great futare. So, too, because New York has had a Tweed, all municipal officers throughout the country, and especially those who have a spark of energy and public spirit, are denounced as Tweeds. With @ poverty of ideas in keeping with the | narrow-minded indiscriminate abuse indulged in by them of everything that encourages pro- grees, high aspirations, faith in God, man, or woman, they repeat with parrot-like Iteration the ery of “Tweed!” “Tweed!” all along the lime, whenever and wherever a street is im. proved, @ sewer laid, a building erected or a nuisance abated. Truly we ought to be proud of our dignified, judicial, Iarge-minded, pubtic- spirited. benignant independent press!” Mr. Jefferson Davis, who has never been able to open his mouth without blundering, begins to appreciate the golden qualities of silence. ‘The other day a number of democratic friends called upon him at Vicksbarg to elicit from him ab expression of bis views on public affairs, and Mr. Davis declined to accede to their request, saying that “in view of his peculiar situation, | st could be of little benefit to our people or the principles to which we were all devoted, and that the occasion might be seized by those who differed from us to take advantage of anything he might say for the purpose of using it to our mjury.” He said further that it had been his resolution after the war to make no public speeches, and that on the occasions when he had deviated from the rule the result had jus- tied the wisdom of silence. —_—_—_-ese-—__ ‘The Chicago Tribune endorses the suggestion | of the Washington correspondent of the Boston /eurnal that Congress should annul the charter of the Washington Monument Association and | give the receipts and expenditures publicity, and then take hold of the work of building the monument in such away that it will be com- pleted asa a centenn The V irginius prisoners get ot scot t free. Bid tte, wath of Ea tate Bidets * Biston: Nichols & Throuch the When Mr. Kiddie, in the midst ef his busy practice as a leading lawyer, achieved one of the most successful novels of the year 1373, it was perhaps considered by some of tho critics a5 ‘a chance shot,” not likely to be repeated; but we are not sure that the quickly-succeeding volume wnder notice is not likely to rank even higher in American fiction than its predecessor. It is less episodical, for instance, and has fewer passages that could be spared without detri- ment to the thread of the story. At the same time it is marked by the same clear-cut delin- eations of character, undercurrent of quiet humor, and accurate local coloring that charac- terized “ Bart. Ridgeley.” The only thing com- monplace about ‘The Portrait” is its name, | and we would suggest that in future editions | (it has already reached a fourth edition, w hear,) it be changed for something more characteristic of the racy, brilliant flavor of the book. The scene of ‘The Por- trait” is laid, like “Bart. Ridgele: in Northern Ohio, and the writer has managed to give s curious air of reality te his story, not only by the accuracy of the local descriptions, where his foot was on his native heath, but by the graphic outline portraitures of the strongly marked, robust public men that were developed in that part of Ohio thirty years ago. The history of Mormonism in Ohio is told inoi- dentally, and we get in this way the best pen- portrait of Jo. Smith tuat bas yet appeared, though the current of the story is somewhat interrupted thereby. According to current re- | port, ‘The Portrait” was written in the odd hours of a single fortnight. Not unlikely, Mr. Riddle does his best in throwing off a story at white heat, and a single one at that, but we sns- pect that, successful as his two ventures in fiction have been, he will do yet better when he gives himself more time for revision. The best chapters in “The Portrait” are those to which | he has apparently given the most pains; the opening one for instance, which is quite as good as the famous opening chapter in ‘Adam | Bede.”* BELIGI CB. Hollis, of Louisville, Kentucky. A large portion of the book of 550 Pages is devoted to the wonderful things in the supernatural line achieved in dark closets and under tables through the mediumship of Mrs: Hollis while in Cincinnati. A great many of the spiritual letters written upon a siate heldby the medium under a table purport to be from the Empress Josephine. In these letters Jose- Phine tells about people peing ‘‘shaky” on the subject of =piritaalisms; says the manifestations in Smith street, Cincinnati, were “the great sensations of the day” in the spheres; that Louis Napoleon was the son of her husband, but was “not an entire success," asks that the spirits and tucky, than of the defunct Empress, unless F mpresses deriorate sadly in style in Elystam.
