A BRUTAL STRP-NoTHER—A Little Girl Com- pelled to Sleep in the Woods.—A letter from Sala- manea, New York, dated the 16th inst., says thatayear or two since a Pole named Peter Moskey, a widower, with adaughter sixor seven years old, was married to a woman who has ever since maintained a system of domestic tyranny over both husband and child. On Fri day last the girl was found tn the woods about a mile west of the place near where her father and stepmother live. She was nearly dead from exposure and hunger, and said she had been wandering for three d within sight of home, but was not allowed to come in the house by her stepmother. She gave as a reason for this cruel- ty that in looking for their cow on the Tuesday previous, she had lost a little shawl, which she was unable to tind. The loss being made known to her stepmother, she beat the child until she was black and blue in places and then com- pelled her to go back to the woods and look ror the shawl. The little girl searched in vain for it, and, cold, hungry and almost exhausted, had repeatedly returned home begging to be allowed nd warm herself a moment, but was as often torced to go away by her ster mother. The story of the child creates the most intense indignation in the community, and the step- mother and the father were arrested. The heating in the case revealed a system of brutal- itv towards the child on the port of the inhuman stepmother that has few parallels on record. The little girl, for trival offences, has been forced to sit in ice cold water for an hour at the time; tied up by the thumbs and whipped; forced to lie in the woods all night, with the scanticst of clothing, in all kinds of weather, obliged to perform labor thata man would con- sider b: and kept continually on the most meagre fare. She is literally covered with bruises and scars which she had received at the hands of the womaa chosen by her father to be her mother. Singulariy, the only resuit of the investigation thus far bas been the taking of the child out of the control of its unnatural protectors and placing her in a family at Corry, Pa. A Livery Excovyrer Wits Bgars.—A hunter, of Garrett Lena Maryland, named Christian Bolyard, started in pursuit of the gang of bears which bad been infesting the pine awamps for some time past, and on Friday his dog ‘‘winded” them, when proceeding cautiously he espied three of them lying in one nest, appa- rently asleep. Taking deliberate aim he into their midst, killing one and wounding a second. The dog rushing upon them, drove third up a tree, and then attacked the wounded bear which proved more than a match tor him. Being a very large female, she seemed inspired with the instinctive idea that the dog was not the chief cause of her trouble, so she gave him a hug, slapped him out of her reach, and then started in pursuit of Mr. Bolyard. In the mean time Mr. Bolyard had succeeded in myn! his gen, and as the bear approached he fi hastily, slightly wounding her a second time. This Second shot seemed only to enrage her the more, but «lid not check hat purenit, which was row a race for life. Mr. yard well knew that if be took refuge in atree that her bear- ship would prove more than a match for him in the climbing business, so the only hope left for his life was to run for it, and although very fleet of foot, his speed and “bottom.” would not have saved him bad he not, with most wonder- ful dexterity, succeeded in reloading his ritle as heran. By this time the bear was withina few feet ot him. Wheeling around suddenly he tired a third shot, which proved fatal. When the last shot was fired the bear was so nearthe muz- zie of the gun that the flash singed the hair on her face. Mr. Boiyard then returned and shot the bear which the dog had treed, making in all, three of those animals killed single handed in one day—‘‘and it wasn’t a very 4 day for bears either.”"— Garrett County (Md.)
