EVENING STAR. = Geesny 6: BOTES.......Ratton, Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. "WASHINGTON CITY: _ WEDNESDAY ......December 17, 1873. ‘The gang of biack-mailers and mslignants who have sought revenge for repulses by striv- ing te defeat the confirmation of Governor Shepherd have failed to bring forward a par- ticle of evidence why he stould not be con- firmed, and the Senate yesterday showed its appreciation of the disinterested labors of these gentry by refusing to reconsider the vote of confirmation. It would seem to be about time that the efforts of this pestilent gang to depre- ciate the credit of the District, break down our Gnances, defeat Congressional appropriations, and hinder the work of improvements here should be sternly frowned down by all inter- ‘ested in the welfare of the city, and the Board of Public Works be permitted to proceed with their arduous duties without. being hounded and iatenrapeed at every step. s20e- It is reported from Paris that in consequence of the successes of the republicans at the late supplementary elections for members of the assembly, the members of the right will pro- pose an alteration of the su‘Trage law, by which 4,000,000 of persons will be deprived of the elec- tive franchise. Such trifling with the rights of the people sounds strange to republican ears. Suppose, for instance, the dominant party in Congress should abridge the right of su‘frage simply because their political opponents had achieved certain successes. To say that the American eagle would scream under the cir- cumstances expresses but half the truth! ——__-+e2-___ The big pills and little pills are at war in Michigan. The homeopaths haye applied to the courts for a legal order compelling the regents of the state university to appoint two homeopathic physicans to its medical depart- ment, probably on the ground that the institu- tion is a state university, and has no right to discriminate between schools of medicine. The court holds the application under consideration. ——___-<<e-__ The state of Michigan proposes to lead in the matter of prison reform. Striped garments are to be abolished, convicts will be educated, and when finally discharged each man will recei suit of clothes, $10in cash andsuch money as he may have earned by overwork. Prison reform may be needed in some directious but | this looks like carrying a good thing 8 little too far. ———_o+e-_____ ‘The New York Times has been investigating ‘the condition of the workingmen of the metrop- olig, and finds it not so serious as was generally | apprehended. The number of idle machanics is but 10,790 instead of 30,000, as has been re- ported, and this number does not greatly exceed the number out of employment at this time last year. ——_—___-~e--______ The New York Evening Post thinks it proba- ble that neither of the senatorial claimants | from Louisiana is entitled to a seat, and be- | Heves that if the whole subject could be legally remanded to the people of Louisiana, under the guaranty of @ fair election, that would be the most equities way to settle the affair. sa ¥ We trust that the House committee which has charge of the investigation of Gen. Howard will see the impropriety of sitting with closed doors. let the investigation be public; we see no good reason why it shonld be otherwise.
