The Pennsylvania coal company, fully appreciating the necessities of the present situa- tion, has not only made a reduction of fortyand ' sixty cents per ton on the prices of last month, as stated in yesterday's Star; but has adver- | tised a large reduction in retail prices at thew | yards in New York o'-5, The New sora ssmes says that when the fact became generally known | that the Pennsylvania company contemplated lowering its prices, its officers were plied with | arguments, by persons interested in the combi- nation, tending to show that such action was | uncalled for and impolitic. The combination bas otherwise made the most strenuous exer- tions to maintain control of the market. Its agents have been busily at work trying to in- fluence everybody worth influencing, to imitate the Reading action, and have been present at the great | auction salés outbidding ali competitors. At the Scranton sale, out of about 70,000 tons sold, agents of the combination bought 50,000. Stove coal, the monopoly was determined, should | be sold at $5.45 per ton, (wholesale,) and they have been dorg everything possible to keep it | at that price. By large purchases at the auc- tions, the combination is enabled, with itsown immense supplies, to hold possession of the buik of anthracite coa) intended for the market, and by outbidding others has crippled or driven, | small competitors and jobbers out of the field, or has forced them to buy of the monopoly at | ! rates which oblige them to maintain retail | Prices at the old standard. It submits that it | would be shameful to select a few men, and put | them, during one session, under the burden of such temptations as they would be iikely to en- | counter. ——____wee-- ‘The democratic members of the House who held @ caucus on Saturday evening last and virtually indorsed the back-pay grab and credit mobilier business are coming in for some pretty sbarp rebukes from the democratic journals. ‘The Baltimore Gazette regards their action as a serious mistake, and says the democratic mem- bers of beth houses must unite in support of a bill which will sweep most thoroughly the obnoxious salary law from the statute-book; that only in this way can they hope to retain and to deserve the confidence of their con- stituents. ——_—_——__-«ee- __ ‘The sensation dispatches from Havana that the Virginius had been siezed by the Spanish. Cubans and converted into a war vessel are not confirmed, but we have another batch of exeit- ing dispatches from that quarter, which may prove trueor may not. If the Havanese are really disposed to be unpleasant in giving up the Virginius it may be necessary for Uncle Sam to administer a dose of manifest destiny to them and their tight little Island.
