Eaton appeared before Judge Cartter (in obedience to a writ of habeas corpus issned ¥ on the petition of Kat- rina Freitag) with @ little girl named Marie Hess, aged 10 years, whom her mother. Mrs. Freitag, the petitioner, alleged was restrained of her liberty. Mrs. Eaton, who is an elder:y ludy, 1e-iding on 20th street, near apbeared and stated that in August of last year Mre. Freicag, the mother of the child, gave her the control of the girl,.a-king her to raise ner. and that she had since treated the child as one of her own ehildren, was sending her to schoc and also to Sunday school, and did not detain the child against her will.’ Yesterday morn'ns the mother, whom she had heard wanted the child to hire out in a bzer saloon, cams to the ouse for her, bat the ebfld refused to go with her. Under department fire-district rules this was all the apparatus to respond to the box from which the alarm was struck. A general, alarm was then nm sounded, and the other engines.
